I was living with family (including a 3 year old shih tzu named Cooper) and recently relocated about an hour away with my dog Jack. Cooper and Jack got pretty tight during the 1 1/2 months that they lived together. Cooper was particularly infatuated with Jack and the separation has been tough on him.

I would like to visit my family reguarly and I want to make sure Cooper won't be going through 3 days of depression every time Jack and I leave. Anyone been in a similar situation? Insight would be appreciated.

How about getting the dog a playmate. Recently my 16 year old cat died and Lola and him were very close. The morning after he died she went to all the places the cat would normally be before I took her out and did not find him because I removed his body the night before.

About a week ago I adopted a kitten that did not back up when Lola approached him. Earlier that day we went to Petsmart to adopt one but every kitten she saw backed away from her with the arched back routine so I knew it would not be the right one. With the kitten we have now I allow her to play with him under close supervision which is me on the bed with Lola and the kitten. Now she is no longer depressed like she was when Mugsy died and every time I get up from the chair and heading towards the bedroom she is right behind me wanting to play with the kitten.

Not the same situation as yours but similar.
