so which do you use? sell by date or smell by date?

so, since i have been doing alot of storing up for the winter months, i have noticed alot of the things i buy have "sell by date" on them or "freeze by date"... but, my mom was telling be just because it says "sell by date" does not mean "use by date", she also said it depends the type of food, come canned goods can go for 6 months over the "sell by or use by" date, while things like milk and cheese can only be used by the date printed.

so, which do you do? the sell by date or the smell by date? by smell by i mean if the sell by or expire date is like a day away do you just smell it, or toss it out?

I'm horrible about food, so for most things it has to be at least a week before the sell by date is up before I'll eat it, but some things don't last that long.

Sell by date. If it's even close to that date, I am hesitant to eat it. I'm really weird about my food.

Smell it. If it smells fine I'm good to go. Once when I still drank milk I drank it totally rancid. Grossest thing ever.

They put the sell date on there so it clears the shelves before it goes bad...so (depending on what it is) even if the sell-by date is tomorrow, so long as you don't let it sit for another 6 months, you should be ok, especialy giving it the smell test. "sell by" and "expiration" are not the same thing.

Yeah, that's how I justify eating the 3 day old food too, lol. J/k I know you are right.:p

By law the 'use by' date is just when half the flavor (judged by some giant tongue somewhere ;)) expires. It's still very edible past that point, though.

A lot of things are still good long past the expiration date, though. I had some 3 year old Mt. Dew the other day and it still tasted fine, had no fizz to speak of though lol.

But the sniff test isn't just for clothing.

LOL, me too! I start using the "smell by" method a few days before the "sell by" date. Once the date has come about, whatever it is goes in the trash....especially milk!

Milk is actually good for a week after the sell by date. Now, I don't follow that rule, but I'm reminded of it every time I refuse to drink milk that has passed the sell by date. My dad used to work on my grandfather's dairy farm.

SMELL by, all the way.

I look at exp dates, but if it still looks/tastes good I eat it. I also ignore things like "consume within 10 days of opening". I'm pretty sure I've drunken soy milk and OJ up to a month after opening....they tasted a lil funny, but I didnt get sick!

Leftovers I keep for like a week...those rotisserie chicken you buy in the store...finally just finished mine a week and 2 days after I bought it.

cheese...just cut off the mold & keep using till gone...

I think throwing away food that smells/looks/tastes good based on some stupid date is a total waste, no offense...
