Hey all!

I am looking at getting a second dog within the next year or two and I wanted to get a jump on it. I'm a research nerd! I came here seeking advice and reccomendations on the breed/size/age.

I currently own a 7-month-old female yellow lab. Idgie is pure muscle, long and lean, and I wouldn't expect her to grow any larger than 55-60 lbs. She is an absolute doll, but full of energy! I'd say energy-level-wise she is probably pretty typical for a lab, running amuck one minute and collapsing the next. She gets along very well with other dogs (the doggy daycare ladies use her as a meet-and-greet and socialization guinea pig, which she loves), but she is definetely still in the puppy mindset (clueless to wants of older, quieter dogs) and I'll expect she'll stay that way for the next few years at least. I'd like a breed that can match her energy level and serve as a good playmate.

She has a huge fettish for little dogs. But, if I dog go for a smaller breed, the breed must be able to hold its own (i.e. a Jack Russell, although my boyfriend isn't a huge fan of the breed). She doesn't know her own strength (or how to stop!) and tends to bulldoze or lineback little ones (to my boyfriend's amusement and my horror).

I'd like to get a puppy or young dog, as I feel the acclimation between the two dogs would be easier. I am well equipped to train a young one, as I work as a teacher and have the summer off for potty training and Sit-Stay-Come 101. I am fairly active and able to walk my dog, take her to the dog park, play fetch, etc.

On a final note, the dog does not have to be a purebred -- I'd love to adopt or rescue from the Humane Society or a local Rescue. I just want to add another member to my family and provide my lab with a playmate -- she would love it so!

Some kind of spaniel, like maybe a springer or springer mix may be good. German pointers have a looootttt of energy too.

What kind of things to you like in a breed? I LOVE JRTs and they have lots of energy .. but its a different energy. LOL I could never live with a lab (or at least the ones I know).

It sounds like most high-energy, dog-friendly, medium-large dogs would do.

Check petfinder in your area. I'd adopt a dog closer to the age of yours, instead of a puppy. Idgie might overwhelm a young puppy, and a slightly older puppy/ young adult would be able to keep up right away.

A dog-friendly, higher energy american pit bull terrier might be a good choice...there's plenty of info on here.
Also, as everyone said, another sporting breed, a border collie or aussie, etc. would work well.

why not another lab or lab mix?
I wouldn't go with a tiny pup - maybe 6 months to a year - you want someone to keep up with your current dog, and be a play mate.

If you go to a rescue, they should be able to match you with a dog that will get along with her. I agree with Milos Mommy - it sounds like most high-energy, dog-friendly, medium-large dogs will be a good fit. Rescues are FULL of them. I was volunteering at one near me yesterday and I probably met ten or so dogs that could fit your household.

You might not want to get a puppy - maybe another young adult. They're easier to housebreak, set in their temperaments and size, so you know what you're getting.

My Peanut is a lab/terrier mix that I rescued. He's a perfect match with my lab.

I would say another lab. My lab tends to seek out others of "his kind" and tends to enjoy interaction with them over other breeds sometimes.

There are tons of labs that needs homes. I would go with a lab rescue--they will know the history, temperaments, etc of the individual dogs and should be able to match you up with a good companion for you and you labbie...
