last night i was watching the news and they showed seattle police officers shooting a pitbull that the owner allegedly sicked on the police... when the dog was running thru the police to get away...

then a couple months ago a dog was running around this neighborhood... and guess what happened to be a pitbull... and the police were trying to get the dog to shot and the dog ran thru the cars and ran in to this yard and they shot him... for no darn reason... dogs are as bad as the owners make them  ....

has this happened in your city?

I haven't even watched the news in a while! I need to find a news channel that isn't as biased as Q 13.

That really sucks, and for it to be so close! :(

I have read articles about police officers shooting pit bulls, but that was only because the dog was attacking one of them or attacking a police dog. If a police officer shoots a dog for no reason, I think that is very cuel.

I live in Milwaukee WI and the Cops love to shoot Pitbulls here. They are quick to shoot any dog that is loose but seem to really revel in shooting Pitbulls.

When I first moved here 5 years ago, they shot a 4 month old pitbull in the alley behind my house. They said the dog was attacking. The owner was an idiot for leaving a puppy loose but come on....a 16 week old puppy attacking? What BS is that. I had seen the puppy out an about before and it did nothing but wiggle at strangers.

Another case was a lady cop shooting a 35lb cocker spaniel in the back yard of a house that they were called to, to help on a suicide invention call. The dog ran out the door, ran passed several other cops greeting people and this lady cop shoots it right in the yard and then ticketed the owner for the dog being off lease....IN the back yard.

There are more cases but it is just making me mad thinking about it. Everytime I am walking my dogs I get scared when we see a police officer, how screwed up is that. I am sure there are lots of good cops who love dogs but man it just seems like every 6 months there is a story of a cop shooting a dog in the metro Milwaukee area.

I guess I will add my 2 cents.
My husband is a cop, if you hadn't already guessed.

I think if you are going to tell news of corupted law enforcement, you should at least give a link to a news site with the article. So we can judge for ourselves with "facts".

With my husband, an incident happened a couple years ago, before we had Rocket.
(I know this info from a personal experience not a news article.)
Routine traffic stop.
Guy doesn't stop.
Hubby follows.
He finally pulls into his own driveway.
Guy will not show registration and insurance or drivers license.
Guy will not get out of car.
Guy gets violent.
Guy gets peppersprayed.
Guy pulls gun on hubby.
Guy will not put gun down.
Hubby shoots guy.
Guy is injured but runs behind house and into back door, and drops his gun.
Guy lets his own German Shepherd out of house to attack hubby.
*******Hubby is almost attacked by GSD, but he does not shoot GSD, he hits him in the head with the stock of his shot gun, which he retrieved when guy ran into the back door of his house.
Now hubby had every right to shoot attacking GSD, but he didn't.
Not the dogs fault he has poor owners.
Guy is severely injured but ends up making it.
Guy serving his time in federal prison.
Hubby still working and now has Rocket with him, certified in narc, tracking, apprehension, and personal protection.

I really don't talk much about my husband profession, because people always
have the wrong ideas about cops. I have talked about Rocket some, but this is a dog forum.
Just like every profession, there are some bad mixed in with the good.

Just my 2 cents.

No Rocket is not the same dog that the "guy" had.
As far as I know, his wife still has their dog. :)

That would have put a wierd twist to the story, but no.

Yeah, Julie. The rotten ones make it hard on the ones like your husband. We've had our share of dog shootings in Tennessee. Unfortunately for the idiot cops who did a couple of them, the videotape was running and it was obvious that not only was there no attack at all, but on one, a family from Florida was pulled over, everyone including the kids pulled out of the car, and when the family members pled with the cops to at least shut the car door so their pet dog wouldn't jump out of the car and get hit, the cops laughed and told them no. When the dog jumped out of the car, obviously confused but wagging his tail furiously and exhibiting all sorts of submissive behaviour, the cop shot it point blank several times before killing it - in front of three young kids.

Yea, its too bad that the most publicity a cop gets is when it is about something questionable.
When most cops are saving lives, protecting people, and chasing down dangerous criminals.
When in reality bad cops are far and few between.

And I still don't believe everything I read anyway.

I mean who do most people call when they find themselves in a terrible situation.....

Everyone hates them, until they need one.

Children are afraid of my husband when he is in uniform, because of how
parents talk about cops around their children. And the worst thing a parent can say is; you better be good or the cops will come and get you.
or Straighten up or the cops will take you to jail.

I have heard parents say this to their children in front of me.

My husband has had death threats against him and Rocket. I guess because
they have found so much drugs. Not just a little pot. But I mean crack, heroin, cocaine, and so much more.

So I guess I just would like to speak up on behalf of the good ones out there. and say GOOD JOB!

And nothing happened to the officer?

Dont worry about it, Whitedobelover, lol. I just tend to take it too personal when people start talking about cops, sorry if I offended anyone, but I still think cops should be recongnized for the good they do.

Most of the time.....I love cops. When I don't have my dogs with me, I usually have a positive interactions with police. They have a really rough job and thank God we have the good police officers we do.

However, with this Police force in Milwaukee WI, they seem to shoot first and ask questions later. I even spoke with the Police chief about it and she simply said that there is no force but deadly force when responding to dogs that "make" the officer fear for their safety. No nightstick, No Pepper Spray, No Kick. I asked her if she might train her officers in dog behavior and she said that would not be needed.

I have found that in rural areas they are more savy when dealing with dogs. I have notice since I moved to the city that people in general in the city fear dogs more.

Your husband, being a K9 officer, really knows dogs.

I am sorry if I offended you and your husband, I was just pointing out my bad experiences.

Julie ,, I admire what your husband does daily. I personnally don't think any cop would shoot unless they are afraid of their, their dogs or anyone arounds safety . Two days ago there was a shooting 2 doors down from me. I went out after the crime scene was succure to talk to the investigators and neighbors. Chip and the foster dog I have in were barking up a storm when I left the house. A Canine Cop pulled up in front of my house, and the dog was left in the patrol car while he walked to the scene. His beautiful dog started barking at my dogs in the house, and they shut up !! I wonder what he said to them !!! They never barked again ...even when the dog left the car to check out the house......so smart !!!!

Any...thats pretty broad and if you really think about it is not realistic but idealistic. I think more cops, especially urban police should have more training on dogs and dog behavior.

They should also be taught that they need to use other forms of control besides deadly force. When dealing with humans, police have to use the least amount of force needed to get the job done. It should be the same with dogs.

If you can kick the dog do it, if you need your night stick or pepper spray...use it. Heck anything is better than shooting the dog. I think pepper spray would work on the vast majority of dogs. I have been walking my dogs in the city of Milwaukee for 5 years and I have run into aggressive dogs; the only one that required anything more than yelling is a GSD. I kicked it once to keep it from biting my dog and it left us a lone.

Amstaffer, let's say though, that a Pit Bull really had its heart set on hurting someone (Unlikely, yes.. Let's say it was going after somebody's dog.) Would pepper spray really be enough to overpower that intense determination and strength that is so typical of Terriers?

As well as some of the cops, I think the general public could really benefit by learning a bit more about dogs.

Well as someone who has been sprayed with pepper spray (during training, not as a criminal) I would say yes. Today's peppers spray is much harsher than the mace of the old days. If not...you then shoot the dog. Just as with people you don't jump to the final option. They make Pepper spray that stops Grizzly bears, why not issue that to police officers.

a german shephard does not need to be kicked at all! it is a breed that is intelligent, sensible and sensitive! it is not the dog that needs to be shouted at: it is his owner/handler who did not keep the dog under control! by the way...
no need shouting at any dog! they hear much better then we ... so test it out ... if you do speak with calm soft voice your dog will have more attention to what you are saying!
we have labs , and always a shephard to it .... a problem ....? raised like a lab ?
no just raised, trained and handled as any other breed!
