Umm...how is shocking these crabs on purpose for research over and over...less cruel, than a painful death for the purpose of at least EATING them? I have never assumed they didn't feel pain...just like I never assume being shot in the head or stunned in the head is not painful. It is a means to kill an animal quickly, to consume it...sheesh.

Gawd...I can see where this is all going. Like the stuff doesn't cost enough, already.

I suppose the beak of an octopus or bird punching through their shell is more humane. We need to come to grips with the fact that we arent above nature and nature can be brutal.

This is why I can't eat it anymore. I just can't shut my eyes to it and I can't condone it. Humans can recognise pain and suffering in other beings, how the hell do we live with ourselves knowing we are causing it?

But interestingly enough, we are not birds or octopus, we are people. If we are going to kill animals to eat them, fine, but IMHO we have a moral obligation as the species with somewhat more developed reasoning capacity to find a way to end life as painlessly as possible.

I get that the OP was trying to make an animal rights reference, but there is a difference between animal right and animal welfare, and dispatching something in the most humane way possible is an animal welfare issue IMHO.

of course they do , haven't ya ever heard the little shreiks of "aghhhhhhh" when they get dunked?

but seriously , it is a quick death .
How would you like to be thrown into a tub of boiling water, and see how long it takes for you to die? Bet it'd hurt like hell, but don't worry, it would probably be "quick".

kinda of agree with this...^^

at the same time I feel we should try as a species to be as humane as possible when we can....because we can.

Ok what is your painless way to kill a crab? Lethal injection? The appeals would be torture in themselves. ;)

If there is a predator big enough to do it to me then , well it would suck but at least it would be quick! :rofl1::rofl1::rofl1::rofl1::rofl1:

I have no problem with eating other animals . Obvilously some here do , but i dont so spare me the "How would you feel if it .........."

The circle of life , is my motto ...or is it Eat or be Eaten ?:rofl1:

Death is ALWAYS a kink in the whole plan and NEVER is it welcome.

Good Gravy...wring your hands for the crabs...while killing tons of FLEAS on your dogs with toxic chemicals. You think those fleas and ticks just fall asleep and never wake up?

And you aren't even eating those fleas are you?
Poor fleas...SAVE THE FLEAS!!

Actually, I try not to kill bugs, rodents, or anything for no reason. If the fleas didn't have the potential to spread real disease and pain to the dogs I wouldn't bother them. If flies didn't cause the horses pain, etc I'd leave them alone too.

I have no issue with people eating crabs and if boiling really is the quickest and most painless way to kill them, fine. But the world isn't going to end because maybe there might be a less painful way to off them.

I am glad other people see this. It isnt a term I hear many people use but it is absolutely alive and well in the U.S.. It is a word that deserves its own thread.

They get a panic started and make it sound like it will only effect "bad" people and those who are unaffected are ok with these "harmless" little infringements. No one really cares until it lands on their doorstep and then they wonder why they have no support. I am scared to death of the "There should be a law!" people.

Incrementalism just like BSL...and for the same reason, and by the same groups.
You mean like sex offender laws? Those are definitely a good example of incrementalism. First they just put people in jail, then they started making them register and stay away from schools, etc.

Why not just let them all off the hook, all off the registries, and let them get jobs in day cares if they wish? I mean, I wouldn't want to drink the Kool-Aid.....

Look, I don't have an issue with people eating meat, hunting, doing most things with their animals, etc. I do not believe in animal rights. I do, however, believe in animal welfare and showing compassion where possible--- NOT because animals have a RIGHT to it, but as human beings it is the RIGHT thing to do.

This is pretty much how I feel. ^^

And really... if there isn't a way to humanly kill crabs, then will we die without crabmeat?
At what point do we get over ourselves and relise we don't deserve everything just because we want it.

The "shrieks of pain" you hear when dunking shell fish into boiling water is air escaping their shells. Seeing as they don't have vocal chords they cannot produce sound.

If I could eat shell fish I would boil them away! LOL!

Or why don't we try 14 year old girls for child porn? There are several cases of kids doing stupid things with cellphone cameras and myspace, and now they're being charged just the same as if it was their parent/teacher/neighborhoodcreepyguy taking the pictures. If convicted, they will have to register as sex offenders.
