Hi Everyone!

I noticed that my schnauzer puppy (10 weeks old) has been scratching himself a lot....the ears and sometimes the neck area. I don't know if he's just not use to having a collar on, and so he's been scratching his neck. But I've taken him to the vet for his second set of shots just this past weekend and asked the vet about his scratching issues. He told me that it's normal for puppies to scratch and he checked my puppy for fleas....no fleas (thank goodness!). The vet also checked his ears to make sure they weren't damaged from his scratching. And I haven't taken him outside much or exposed him to other dogs. So, I was wondering if other owners have had this problem with their puppies, and what I can do to resolve or help him with the scratching.

Thanks!

Shi :)

Gus gets all itchy when he is changing his coat... Ie: summer to winter and back again.... Maybe it's that??

scratching

We got Wrigley at 10 weeks and put a collar on him right away and he scratched at it for about a week until he got used to it. Also make sure if you bathe him to use a gentle puppy soap free formula--and to feed a good quality food (for his coat and skin)

I am feeding him Nutro Max for Puppies right now because that's what the breeder was feeding him. I was wondering about food allergies....do you think it is possible that he may be allergic to the food? How can I be sure that my puppy is allergic to the food right now?

Thanks!

I think it might just be the collar. How long has he had his collar for? Is it new? My puppy never scratched his neck at all until I put the collar on him. I refuse to take it off until he gets used to it!

If you are feeding him the same food as the breeder's and he's only doing the scratching now, then I doubt it's food allergies.

Thanks JuBee! Someone also mentioned about mites on puppies called "walking dandruff". And I was reading up on the whole mites thing on puppies/dogs. I had the vet check him out for fleas last weekend and she said no fleas. So if the puppy did have mites, the vet would be able to tell from looking at his skin condition, right!?!! Plus, I also read that if the puppy has mites, we (the owners) will get them too and we can tell with the red bumps on itchiness on ourselves. Since I have not expereince any of these symptoms & the vet said no fleas and the pup is in good condition....I don't need to worry right?

Maybe I am over thinking his scratching issues. I am just bothered by him scratching himself....because I think something is bothering him.

I just hope it's the new collar. He's had the collar for a week now.

Well if your vet said that the puppy is in good health, then I think you shouldn't worry and the fact that he's only had the collar on for a week probably is the cause of the scratching. We, as good dog owners, wouldn't be good dog owners if we didn't over-analyze, be over-protective, and absolutely love and care for our babies! :p
