My dog flings herself down on every surface when she lies down, and as a result her elbows are scabbed and bare. It looks horrible, but doesn't seem to bother her. Anyone else have this? I've never seen it in my dogs before, but then she's both the largest and the most emphatic I've owned.

does she have soft cushions on the floor? Mary has some callous, but not much for her age..i let Vic on the furniture he has none. Sometimes a dog chooses to lie on a hard surface if it is cool and they are hot..but usually a dog will chose something softer if it is available. It is not unusual, and kennel dogs have quite frequently large callouses where bone is against a hard surface.

She can and will sleep on two beds, seven carpets, and a sectional sofa so large it is entirely possible to lose an SUV between the cushions. The scabs come from her chosen sojurns on the hardwood floor and her backyard hangout on the cement steps. She likes to stretch out on her side on the bare floor.

she loves a cool surface then..Bronki did too. They sell a pad for hot dogs..it helps keep them cool. i have the info somewhere if i run into it i will post it. i always wanted to order it for him and never could raise enough money to allow that. it is tough, and has a gel kind of insides.

Make sure they are not soft and fluid filled. Large and giant breeds are at risk for getting "hygromas" which are fluid filled callouses on the pressure points of knees, elbows etc. The only thing other than surgery that makes it better is a lot of soft padding to sleep/lay on and they will usually go away on their own over time.

try to find that cool pad if you can..Bronki got hot, a lot hotter than Mary. Even sleeping on top of the bed had him panting sometimes..he always sought out a cool place..i can't think of where i put that ad. It is in dog fancy sometimes, but if you could it would be real nice for your hotdog and that would eliminate the callouses. what is there won't go away but they wouldn't get any worse.
