I have a male siamese cat we rescued a few years ago from an abusive home. We are guessing he is about 5 or 6 years old now. We've had him for about 4 years now. I had him neutered when we first took him in and have kept him indoors ever since. (he used to be an outdoor cat and constantly got beat up by other animals)

Anyway.... we named him Cocoa and he has turned out to be one of the best pets we've ever had. He is sooooo lovable and funny and full of energy. We briefly toyed around with the thought of getting him a friend to play with because he is so playful all the time, but always decided against it.

Well, my hubby was outside watering the lawn and a neighbor pulled up in their car and yelled out the window "you want a cat" These neighbors just moved into a new house diagnal from us about 6 months ago. They had two great danes out in the back yard, several horses and donkeys in an adjacent pasture... not to mention an indoor cocker spaniel, bull dog, a big male cat and two monkeys.

Apparently they've decided to up and move away. They sold the horses and donkeys. They are boarding the two great danes indefinately. They begged us to take the cocker spaniel but we just can't. We have our hands full with the puppy we have and this cocker spaniel is a pup still. We did however, help them find a home for the bulldog.

So, now they got this cat they have in their car heading to the pound. Unfortunately, our pounds are not a no kill shelter type facility. They will hold them for 3 days and if no one adopts them then they are euthanized.

We felt bad so we took the cat. He is an adult male who has been neutered and declawed. My fear is that they will never be friends after seeing their first interaction with each other.

They hissed and growled and were both very vocal toward one another. They would have gotten into a full fledged fight had I not had a hold of one and hubby had a hold of the other.

I am hoping it's just their normal instinct to be territorial or just to show their dominance to one another.... but it was really stressful. I can't bare the thought of this poor cat just being put to sleep because the owners could care less about him. He seems like a really sweet cat but obviously stressed about his new environment with another male cat and a puppy.

Am I not being realistic by thinking they will become buddies and be able to be left in a room together and not tear each other up??? How can I make this transition easier for the both of them and fascilitate a new friendship between them??

One last question... what is a good dry cat food I can feed them that will help with dry skin, shedding and puking? I know innova is a good dog food... but do they make it for cats?

Foods: I'd say either Innova cat, Innova Evo Cat, or California Natural Cat

as for your other question - i don't know how it works for house cats. i had barn cats and when we got a new one to add to the bunch (only 3 max at a time) we would put all of them in the feed/tack room with a big bag of food, a lot of water, and as many mice and rats as they wanted, for about a week to work things out. Generally by the end of the week, while they wouldn't always be the best of buddies they had figured out their pecking order without too much bloodshed.

I don't know if i'd recommend it now a days... but it definately did work for the pride (?) we had back then.

I would be very careful with the two. My adult female cat has been around alot of many animals(i have done alot of fostering for many animals). She would kill an adult cat. But if you do not let them be alone together for quite awhile they may become friends. You can also when in the room BUT on oppisite ends give them a reward for just being in the same room with eachother. I would give it a chance but be very careful!

I have six cats and every time we've introduced a new one into the home, we've kept it in just one or a few rooms for about 2 weeks to get it used to the fact that this is its home now, and then we put them in a cat basket in another locked room, then get the other cats to sniff around, so they get an idea that theres someone new about.

However my cats are in and outdoor cats so they're not overly territorial about the house in general.

Keep us updated!

+ well done on taking it in!!
