I always figured the pepper spray worked best when it came as a surprise to the turd who gets sprayed.
When it's a surprise, dude has to wonder for at least a few seconds what is blinding him, giving you that extra few seconds to split (OR my favorite, take advantage of dude's newly blind condition and REALLY work him over good).
