My toy poodle Ryder decided to try to fly the other day:(. I really don't know what he was thinking,or what he wasn't thinking. But he landed and broke his Femur (spelling) right above the knee, where it would be very hard to pin it my vet says, So he will have to have the leg removed. :( I know they can do well on 3 legs, we have had many dogs at the shelter with 3 legs, but I feel bad for the little guy.

dogs can do well, very well, on three legs.

however, i have known many dogs who have broken their legs and had successful surgeries... If it were my dog I would get a second opinion before something as serious as an amputation.

in either case, good luck.

Fly? What was he flying off of that he broke his leg? Poor fella. I hope he comes through and picks up on three-legged life quickly! What is the recovery for something like that like?

My vet is my rescue vet as well, he said we could pin the leg but there is a large chance that the place where the Femur (spelling again) is broken that the pin itself would make it worse.

Poor baby! Don't worry about it though - I've known quite a few three-legged dogs that have done perfectly fine on three legs. Although sometimes they have a bit of a hard time scratching the ear if it's a hind leg that has gotten amputated.

Awww poor pup! I hope everything goes alright and he revovers quickly.

I don't have any three legged dogs but I do have a three legged cat :) He did really well and adjusted quickly (He just loves the side of his head that he can't scratch anymore rubbed, I think it gets itchy :D )

When he walks he hops and it looks really funny but when he runs and plays you can't even tell. And the muscle in his one remaining leg is just amazing.

So good luck and I'm sure he's going to be up and jumping around again in no time!

personally i'd want a second opinion from a boarded surgeon, but if that's not in the cards, i hope surgery goes well! little dogs especially can manage well with only three legs.

I know you are going to take good care of him when he gets home and he will be adjusting in no time at all.

Ryder is doing great, I think he does better on 3 legs. He is mad about the neuter though LOL.
