Do you have a running store near you? Often the staff are great at helping you get the right pair of shoes.

getting fitted for a pair by a good staff is usually the best place to go! Most small running shops have people that do this...make sure they look at your feet while standing AND walking though...and then when in each pair of shoes.

I too would say a running store. I'd always bought cheapish shoes from payless.. I felt a running shoe was a running shoe.. Took up running last summer.. Got shoes for my pronation type.. world of difference. Only wear decent running shoes for my foot type now whether running or anything else..

I don't have narrow feet though. I have massive hooves.

Ditto, running store is the way to go. I love the ASICS Nimbus. Tried a different style of ASICS and they tore my feet up. It's sooooo individualized even within a brand!

I got new running shoes a few months ago. I went to a running store for the first time and had my gait analyzed and all that. The best thing I learned was to buy your shoes a size bigger than your normal shoes (I actually went up 1.5 sizes!). The employee said that there should be a thumb's width between the end of your big toe and the tip of the shoe. I was skeptical at first but I have had zero foot pain with my new (big, huge) shoes! Your feet swell when they get hot, so it gives them room.

I do have to admit, I bought the reebok easytone running shoes. Not because I believe my butt with be nicer after, but because they are really really comfy. One of the most comfertable running shoes I've had to date. I also have really wide feet, with no arch at all.

For running agility I bought myself a pair of Vibram FiveFingers TrekSport shoes - <3 them! They're now my regular walking and hiking shoes too. I know a fair number of people who swear by VFFs as running shoes and after wearing them consistently I am noticing that my feet seem happier and in better condition in general.

150 pounds ago when I was running on the cross country team, I wore Brooks or New Balance. I seem to gravitate toward Asics now. The ones with the "cantalever technology" feel best for me when I attempt to jog, but that could just be that it supports my much larger frame better than the racing flats that I used to wear.

The "cantilever technology" shoes are AVIA, Eddie ;) I like them too, but they're way too wide for me.

I'd love to try a pair of the Vibrams! And hey, they don't look as funny as Crocs and no one seems to mind wearing those ;)

^ yup!

I don't wear them as my running shoes yet, but now that it's warm again I'm wearing them on my hikes with Finn and my feet are strenmthening again - I hope to graduate to running in them soon!

After dealing with feet issues all my life and currently having a non-healing stress fracture in my right foot, I finally broke down and went to the local New Balance store. A-MA-ZING! My feet have yet to hurt and the personal service was superb. Love love love my new shoes.
