How about holding a treat on his nose and catching it in his mouth on cue. None of mine will let me. They just go cross eyed and move backwards when I try to put it on their noses.

Hey ....my Chip actually does that.!!! Gus, let us know what you're working on !! I'd love to teach to turn on my coffee pot....I went to a 4 cuppa without set time. Also, to wake me up in the morning... Lord I didn't wake up until 10:30....it was raining out and he didn't want to squat or pot. We went to the grocery at 4 P.M. and it wasn't until 5:00 he finally decided he had to pee !! How he holds it, I don't know! He drinks H2O all day long.

he does some pretty cool stuff, how old is he? when did you start teaching him?
Gus is just 3! March the 1st was his birthday! I started training him the first week we got him, he was a year old and couldn't even sit!! We just seem to be a team, he knows alomst instinctivley what i'm asking of him, and I don't push him hard! If he doesn't want to do it we don't do it!!! Just wanted to make that clear! I'm not a slave driver or one of "those" mothers who have their kids enrolled in everything!! :D

And we're working on the bring me a tissue when I sneeze thing today! Sad thing is that the tissue is always a bit soggy when I get it!! ;) Should have it mastered today though! And he had such a great memory that he won't forget it either!! Went through our whole routine today, some tricks we haven't done for over a year and he's still perfect at them!! :D

Wow, I can see how you'd run out of things to teach with a dog who learns so fast! Maybe you could teach him all those little handy tricks that service dogs learn, like flipping light switches and opening/closing doors. If he's crate trained you could teach him to pull the door shut when he goes in there (you'd have to tie a rag to it). He could also learn to collect all his toys and put them away in a toy box, or collect random stuff you throw around and put it in the trashcan. Maybe teach him the names of all his toys so he can pick any specific one out of a pile and bring it to you.

It sounds like he would do great if you can get him in a agility class or something like that, if you haven't already.

He does the toy thing already, can select one by name / colour and put it away! He picks things up for me off the floor if I ask him too! He helps me carry the washing into the laundry room too!

I've never had him in a crate, he wouldn't like it!! He's quite a big boy (nearly 70lbs so he has to rough it, sleeping on mummy's bed is a real hardship!! ;)

And the nearest dog club for agility is nearly 2hrs away!! :( I would love to do the advanced obedience, but it's just too far!!

You know, a dog like Gus might have a real shot at doing some work on commercials, TV or film . . .
Well he's a superstar to me whatever!! ;)

Lord knows how we've managed to get this far! He's my first dog!! :D
I didn't even have dogs when I was growing up! My parents didn't get a dog till i'd moved out! (I'd been asking them for 16 years for a dog, I move out and they get one! )

My Great Grandad had a gift with all animals, so maybe I get it from him?!! I have no Idea!! :D

My aunt had a black lab named Jake that would do that. He'd sit there with the rubber bisquet on his nose and would not move until you said "GO GET IT" then flip his nose and it was in his mouth.

Well, what can you teach a little dog that can be helpful for me? I taught him all the basic but I don't think anything is useful except for Come, stay, and wait. Any ideas?

Oooh tricky! I don't normally do usefull, I do what's fun! But you canteach little dogs all kinds of tricks! You just have to find out what motivates them, and have lots of patience!!

I think walk backwards is quite a handy one! Push your dog (gently) backwards and say "Back" and reward with a treat or toy, if you keep doing this then when you say "back" eventually your dog should do it by himself! Always good when they are in the way!! :D

You and Gus should be on Pet Star. :D
Maybe! But there's always the problem of your dog doing it perfectly at home and as soon as you tell someone about it and offer to show it to them they don't do it!!! :D In fact they don't do anything, except look at you blankly and everyone thinks you are a liar!! :D

Aw, I'd love to see Gus performing his tricks!! You could try teaching him to say his prayers. Colby does this by putting both paws on my arm, then ducks her head between her legs. It's so cute.

I've taught the girls sign language too!! I'm learning it and figured it'd be fun to teach them a sign or two.

You're welcome to come visit!!! There's only me here at the moment so we have 5 spare bedrooms!! :)

Yesterday evening, I taught him "Hide" where they put their paw over their nose and hide their eyes!!! Soooo cute! But was quite tricky because he thought I wanted to shake hands the whole time!! But we've cracked it now!! :D Just another one to add to the list!!

You could teach him to play dead....my sisters Boston does this quite well and it is too cute...you look at him point your finger like a gun and say "Bang Bang...your dead!" and he falls to the ground on his side and just lays there....
However, she taught him by saying it and then plopping him on his side at 70 lbs it might be hard for you to plop Gus....
Where did you learn to teach all the extra tricks? Did you find them online or just make them up? If you made them up you should make a post about training "the fun" tricks so we can all learn from you!!
