I found out this morning that a very close friend of mine's little ACD Dingo was taken by a cougar yesterday evening. She was seriously the best little dog and she was very young.

It happened in such an unexpected way, my friend's boyfriend was coming home from visiting a friend and had Dingo with him. It was late afternoon and dark out, and they were walking up their driveway, he didn't have his headlamp on. Dingo was right ahead of him, maybe 10 feet away, and he heard a scuffle. He said he thought it was the neighbor's dog or something, didn't think anything of it, but then he heard a yelp and grabbed his headlamp, just in time to see the cougar, with Dingo, and then it took off into the woods. He was of course totally dumbfounded. They searched a bunch that night, through the woods and didn't find anything at all.

I went up there today just to offer some moral support, and I brought Jasper and Yarrow with me in the car. I knew that my friend really wanted to find Dingo's remains if possible, and I figured Jasper and Yarrow might be able to track where the cougar had gone (Onyx isn't as familiar with predators yet). We decided to give it a shot so we went out with Jasper and Yarrow on leash, and 4 people. I took the dogs to where Dingo had been taken and told Jasper "cougar" (he knows that word somehow), so he started sniffing and we followed him and Yarrow along this little pathway. They both got super intense and cut off the pathway. I knew they smelled it for sure, but was completely shocked when we nearly stumbled RIGHT onto the cougar it's self. It was laying on the ground with it's ears flattened, probably about 10 feet away from me and Yarrow. We all started yelling and the dogs were barking and it backed off a ways, but then started coming right back at us with teeth bared, snarling. Clearly it had Dingo's remains there and was guarding the space. This was all probably within 100 feet or so of their house! They must have walked RIGHT past the cougar the night before in the dark during their search. None of us thought the cougar would hold it's ground with 2 big dogs and four people, but we had to retreat and go back to their place. My friend was bawling, just wanting the cougar to chase off so she could find her dog :(

Such a crazy morning, bizarre mix of grief and crazy adrenaline.

Oh no, I'm so sorry for you and your friend :(

I saw these photos earlier on Flickr and was just thinking "Awesome! Brynne took photos of that adorable cattle dog again!" Couldn't believe it when I saw this thread, and can't believe how terrified, angry, and upset your friend must be. Bizarre and crazy certainly describes the day you guys had. Also can't believe the cougar is so close to their place - will it stick around?? I certainly hope not.

RIP Dingo, and good thoughts for your friend and her BF.

That's some tragic **** right there. I just can't even begin to imagine. We've been stalked by mountain lions a few times, but nothing serious has ever happened. I'd be investing in a gun. I hope your friend's heart heals quickly.

Are they going to shoot the cat? That's scary to me that it would come that close to people and stand it's ground like that.

I am so sorry for your friend :(

Oh my goodness. I am so sorry. That is my worst nightmare. Since we are in the mountains a lot as well. My heart goes out to her.

Honestly I would probably get some dogs on that cat and shoot it. Sad, but true. Especially since he was not baking away from people and the dogs.

This is freaking terrifying..... I'm so sorry for you and your friend's experience and poor Dingo.
Also, it does sound like a very dangerous cougar, more than the usual? I'm so sorry.

Yes, they did end up calling the conservation officer to come shoot the cat. The first day they came with no dogs (none nearby I guess), and somehow missed two shots at it. It kept coming back though, so they drove 4 dogs in from like 6 hours away and multiple COs. They sent the dogs in and it wouldn't tree, it stood it's ground and really injured one of the hounds (they were all injured but one very badly), so they took that hound back to the house and my friends had to nurse this wounded dog, who had blood coming out of his nose and eyes, while the other three dogs and two of the officers chased the cat up the mountain, and they finally got it.

The dog got patched up at the local vet, he said it's skull is cracked, but it should probably be ok.

They did manage to find Dingo's remains, they said that her whole front half was completely intact. Must have been so hard to see. They did a burial for her and got some closure at least :( :(
