Aww thanks :)

Hes turning out to be a fabulous one though!! Whenever he knows hes supposed to find someone, he gets very worried for them. jumping up and down, tail wagging(no barking though! YAY! lol).

Hes EXTREMELY persistant too, which I'll have to ease out of him a little bit because hes hard to call off during a search. (something we need to work on if he starts working a different scent trail, other then the one hes supposed to be on) :)

But other then that, he LOVES it! He knows that whenever I grab his orange bag hes going to work :) Jumps up and down by the door and wont leave it until hes coming with me :

He looks so professional. You'll have to keep us updated on his progress as he trains.

Riot is such a beautiful dog! I know he will excel in search and rescue.
I bet it is a blast training.

We always have fun while laying tracks, and tracking with Rocket. You have to keep with it, even if it is in fun........until the real calls come in then she is always ready.:)

Thanks Julie!

It sure is fabulous to be able to have the ability and the wonderful mentor(Dantes owner - our S&R partner) to train with!!

Riot LOVES it to death :)

You definately need to keep on top of the work though! We go out about 2-4 times a week for 1hr training sessions with Riot so far :) Dantes training sessions take longer, because hes more advanced then Riot is.

Riot looks so responsible :)

Charley and I have talked about letting one of the Filas - probably Kharma - try Search and Rescue training, since tracking is one of the tasks they have historically undertaken and she's SOOOOO work-driven  I probably should start looking into finding a training class around here somewhere.

That would be awesome! Its soo much fun! :)

Riot is working on Air Scenting first and then Tracking. A lot of people do tracking first, but we find it easier to train air scenting and then tracking because its harder to get the dogs nose in the air from being on the ground.

You'd laugh if you heard Kharma when she's on the scent of something. She opens those nostrils up wide and you can hear her snuffling and huffing, trying to get the exact 'taste' of whatever scent she's onto. She gets that 'thousand yard stare' that you hear about crack snipers having and off she goes . . . and of course she's big enough and strong enough that there are no obstacles that she can't go over - or through  If there's something under rocks or downed trees, she just uses those humongous paws of hers, hooks her claws in, and moves 'em out of the way, or lowers her shoulders and pushes. I've seen her (and Shiva) move 900+ pound hay bales to get at something. And I've never seen large dogs willing to go into small, dark spaces like these dogs.

LMAO Omg.. Those Round bales are INTENSE!! I can move one around the field for the horses.. but omg.. am I dead tired after that! lol Usually takes at least two of us! lol

The only thing I'd be scared about in S&R is when she goes to lay down on the victim when you play tug!! LMAO!
Dante right now, when he finds the victim, he flies into the air and lands on them as if to say "YOUR IT!!" lol Shes working on that with him currently lol

Sounds like fun! How is Riot doing in his training so far?
Riot is actually catching on extremely quickly! He gets extremely worried whenever someone leaves his sight and he wont quit until he finds them(which is good and bad lol)

We have moved on to "C-Patterns" for training now, where Nadine(S&R partner) holds Riot in a semi-sit position facing me, I play with him a bit before I leave with his tug toy, then I run off in a HUGE c pattern, then duck under some brush and lay extremely still. When he finds me I play tug with him and pull him over my body while I'm laying down, this initiates the fact that Riots got to lay on the victim in case they are in a shock state, it gives them body heat. I'm sort of nervous when we start on Cadavers though because those victims dont get up and play with him lol hes going to get a little stressed about that one..

There are "scent cones" that hes got to follow and he does this fairly well. His first run is always the run where hes getting into working mode, his last run is always the quickest and best :)

We have progressed from straight open flat fields, to slightly forestest small hill fields.

Each hill and tree that is in the field you have to take into scense that the scent from the victim will either get detered from the tree or "pool" by the hill.

So he is doing extremely well so far! :)

So anyways, Riot is working on C Patterns with me, and he has JUST started to find semi-strangers(Nadine and Ryan when they hide).

I have worked Riot in dense woods before as well in a straight line(easier for him at the beginning because its still air scenting we are working on, not tracking) and hes found his victim every time.

Its amazing to watch him follow the scent cone though, they zigzag through the field. I'll try and draw a diagram for everyone to see of his last "c pattern" run and post it for you :)
