Loose. I have a wee car, so even if I took the carseat out, I'd only have room for little dog crates, (and the littles rarely go on car trips, unless to the vet or somesuch) I plan to upgrade to a van someday, and when I do, I'll crate.

Loose, as I'm usually not the one driving and both will sit politely in the back, Radar typically sleeps in the car regardless of how hard he tries to stay awake. If i am driving occasionally Radar is harnessed as he likes to use my lap as a booster seat to see out the window, but very rarely.

I just scored a Snoozer Lookout car seat at a yardsale for $5! So now she can see out the window. She'll be in her Roadie while in it, of course.

Being well-behaved doesn't protect dogs in an accident.
This!!

I'm pretty well behaved in the car too but I still use a seat belt. ;)
And I know I let my dogs ride loose, which I have no justification for. But them being well behaved doesn't make them any better off than a dog who's bouncing around everywhere.

It's been said already but riding well in the car doesn't protect you or your dog in the event of an accident. I try to be as safe as I can. Someday I will have a wagen with a variocage. :)

This. I'm guilty of letting him be loose as I said but I am surprised at the amount of posts that are talking about them being well behaved. I'm not even talking about behavior lol. I know it's probably unsafe. But my reasoning for allowing him to be loose isn't because he behaves well (which he does).

One of the reasons my dogs don't usually ride loose, especially if I have both of them with me:

So they are usually in crates in my car. In my mother's car, Gusto got hooked on riding in a car seat when he was tiny and my mother was picking up my cousin's kid from daycare some days. He loves it so much, we kept the car seat when the kid outgrew it.

Mine are crated. Luckily we haven't had to take all 4 with us anywhere yet, as we only have room for 3 airline crates in my SUV (though I could probably put a smaller 4th one in if I tried hard enough) :p

Depends.

Frag is always loose, unless we're going to a dock diving event and will be rotating in the car.

Recon and Patton are always crated when I have the crate in my car. It's very rare that I don't, but for the last week my roommate has been using my car crate for her sick cat, so I was sans crate. They just rode loose for the week. No problems.

Boarders, fosters, etc. are always crated in the car. I can't wait till I'm on the highway to find out that they want to come into the front seat and potentially kill us all, so I play it safe. Mine are taught to ride freely in case it's ever necessary so they know to lay down/sit and chill out.
