People don't have to take a class to train a dog. I think people put too muh emphasis on classes or titles. Just meet the dog and owner. I'm sure you'll know pretty quick what type handler/dog team they are. Meet at a park and ask the owner to do some simple commands likes come, heel, sit, stay, etc. That will tell you more than a piece of paper will, IMO.
I agree... Izzie has been home schooled up until now and if everyone renting required proof of classes I'd have to get rid of her when i move out. Beginners agility is the first actual class i've ever taken and all three of the other dogs have taken obedience classes and Izzie has far better manners than all three of them.

Hit them in the pocket book with a deposit and pet rent and then ask to "interview" the dog. Most crappy dog owners wouldn't even bother to let you meet the dog.

Meet the dog(s) or pet(s), more than once. Once where they are living now, maybe once at a public place, and have them bring the dog to the property and meet you there.

Then, use your own judgment.

I have never had an issue renting with Bandit. I let the landlord meet him and he has many references to back up he is a good, well adjusted dog and I am a good dog owner. I'd require references personally and would want to meet the animal(s) moving into my rental (if I had one)

I Like Nicole j tip about the resume for the dog. It shows that training was put into the dog and that the owner care enough to make a resume.
As a home owner I would rent to someone like that.
Definiltly meet the dog to have a feel for it. Since you are a dog owner yourself , there a re a few questions you can asked the owner to find out how much training and how well behave the dog is.
- Is the dog going to be left alone all day? (which is probably what happen with your previous tenant - the dog did not get much attention so he kept himself busy)
- what kind of activities do they do with their dogs (if the dog is not included in the family life chances he is going to be left alone!)

I hope that helps a bit.

I agree with meet the pets(and talk to the owners to get a sense of them), call references, and require a pet deposit.
