Renee - Everything Fila!

Hi Renee,
First off I'm sorry if someone has harassed you to do this already, I did a little search and couldn't find more than the odd thread here and there.

Second, to reassure you, this is in no way declaring any intent to own a Fila in even the most remotely near future. Is it a possibility? Yes, but many, many, MANY years down the road when the proper research has been done and my life is much more suited.

The reason I'm posting this is I just have to smile at all of your posts involving your Filas, and your day to day life with them. The little stories and anecdotes about living with the breed tends to make me giggle. You are a very good storyteller, and I can tell you are just head over heels for your dogs.

Please keep up with posting those little stories that make me smile, and if you have any information, photos (yesssss please!!), or any more stories about how life is living with a Fila Brasiliero, please post! You have no idea how much these little posts can brighten up my day.

And God I find it so sad that people are trying to dilute one of the foundation characteristics of the breed. That makes me angry. So many good breeds have been wrecked by trying to do that...

Right now, Miss Shiva is on my short list. She's fully aware that Kharma's weakness is the cows and that every morning, walking Kharma on the leash because she can't be turned loose when the cows are visible from the house, begins with stepping on the little front stoop, holding tightly on the end of the leash, and assuring Kharma that "all of the cowsies are very good cowsies this morning; most excellent cowsies."

Shiva lives to get Kharma in trouble.

Most mornings Shiva will wait until we're out in the yard and she'll start barking from the window, trying to get Kharma roused up. This morning, Shiva decided to take a different approach.

She waited until I had Kharma halfway out of the door, hanging onto the leash, then Shiva bulled her way between my legs (good thing I have really long legs), hurtled OVER Kharma, and charged into the front pasture after the cows she'd just been walking among peacefully ten minutes before.

It was all just too much for Kharma. She lunged, yanking my hand into the door jamb, scraping the side of my hand between my forefinger and thumb across the metal latch plate that sticks out. I left several deep gouges of my hand hanging on that metal plate . . . Blood everywhere.

Kharma stopped immediately as soon as she sensed I was hurt, and man, did it ever hurt. And it's going to get sore and stiff for a few days. I drove in with several layers of paper towel wrapped around my hand, soaked through by the time I got to the store. I'm the only one here today, so I called my Mom to get her to do the nurse thing (she's an RN) and bring some betadine ointment and bandages, so now I've got my right hand taped up, looking like I've had surgery on it.

I'll be doing a lot of things left handed for the next few days, looks like.

Shiva got to spend her day in the laundry room and when I get in tonight she will be sheepish and doing her very best, most special, intensive sucking-up. Kharma will be rubbing her nose in it for the next few days too.

It's impossible to stay irritated at Shiva for very long.

She knows it too . . .

I've really grown to love this breed . . . Which is odd considering my normal taste in dogs. I've always preferred dogs with a rather sharp, intense look and a biddable nature (Border Collies, nearly all the Shepherds, Dobermans, etc) but Filas captured my heart too. When the time comes that I need a large guardian, I don't see myself getting any other breed.

Lol Breeze. If Renee would allow it, when the time comes that I'm ready for my Fila I'll be pestering her for a Kharma puppy too.

Oh my Renee I don't mean to be laughing at your injuries and misfortune but I can just picture the way those two interact and it cracks me up.
I really hope your hand is ok though, and I hope Shiva keeps up with the sucking up for a day or two so you can have a break

At least Kharma had the good sense not to go tearing off after the cows anyway! Unlike a certain Aussie I know after I left a good portion of my back on the asphault...

So it seems like the herding instinct is a natural with Filas then! lol.
Out of curiosity, how are they like with regards to training "otherwise"?
As in basic obedience, housebreaking, etcetera. They seem like highly intelligent canine specimens, with a wonderful sense of humor

And oh, my God, the chicken story nearly had me in tears.

The herding is SO instinctual. I've known Kharma to round up well over 70 head all by herself - scattered out over 60+ acres. And these cows are anything but tame. Bulls and calves too. She puts them in the barn (which is completely open) and they DO NOT MOVE

Now, if I could just figure out how to get her to stop . . .

There was really no housebreaking at all. There were a couple of accidents, but it was just a matter of literally explaining to them that the potty was outdoors. They even prefer to go around the perimeter or in the bushes to leaving piles out in the open.

You don't 'train' a Fila, lol! You negotiate a reasonable agreement that is mutually rewarding I find so often that no audible communication is even necessary - especially with Kharma, who is from pure working lines (Shiva's father was a show dog from Brazil) - she just knows.

They do have a rather warped sense of humor . . . kind of dark sometimes too, lol!

Wow they sound like SO much fun. I'm sure they aren't the dog for everyone but they are certainly tempting for ME

I especially love the comment about the mutually rewarding agreement. They just sound like such great dogs and so very intelligent.

Perhaps... a little *too* intelligent? :yikes:

You absolutely need to be sure that you can stay ahead of your Fila mentally, lol!

I'll never forget the time I was watching Buffy and Bimmer in the yard.

I was standing at the kitchen window, and I noticed that Buffy was sorting through her stash of contraband (things she'd stolen from various places).

Bimmer was lying in the sun where he could see all the way down the driveway and across the lower pasture. Totally contented.

Buffy picked through her treasures until she found the one she was looking for. She carried it gently over to Bimmer and laid it down next to him. Then she went back and got another and did the same thing.

I was standing there thinking how sweet it was that she wanted to share with Bimmer.

Silly me. Bimmer was way ahead of me on that one . . .

He got up, looked at Buffy with his disgusted, "I can't believe you think I'm going to fall for this" face and stalked off and jumped up on top of the old Dodge truck.

It dawned on me - and Bimmer had figured it out before I did - that Buffy wasn't trying to share her stolen treasures . . . she was trying to frame Bimmer!

Oh my... that was another one that made me giggle out loud like an idiot. Good thing no one was around to see it.
