Jazz (8yrs old) got Kennel Cough last week, like Sunday or Monday, she was not improving as quickly as the other dogs in the house that also had it, and seemed dehydrated so I took her to the vet on Friday. The vet prescribed antibiotics and sent her home. She seemed to be improving up until today - she has now returned to the hacking cough followed by a retch (which she hasn't done since Thursday last week) and is overall lethargic and is grumpy (she's growling at the other dogs if they get even within two feet of her which she usually allows to maul her)

She is still on her antibiotics - it was a ten day course - why is this happening? Is she contagious again? I am supposed to leave for a trip tomorrow and she's going with me but there will be other dogs there...?

Please help I'm very worried about her! :-(

I'd call the vet again tomorrow. It's not really normal to improve then go downhill again so quickly unless it's a resistant infection or they got the wrong diagnosis to begin with.

i'd be concerned that it's not just kennel cough and/or that it's progressed to something more serious. i'd think a recheck with the vet is in order. good luck!

Do check with the vet. When our dogs had a round of it, one of them got really ill and almost went into pnuemonia. They all got well, but it took a long time.

Different dogs have different responses to a specific disease. Although they may receive the same therapeutic regimen, the integrity of their immune system also has a big say in their recuperation.

Perhaps her immune system may not be as working perfectly compared to the other pets considering her age and perhaps there may be other consequent infections.

It's best to bring your pet to the vet to safeguard from life-threatening secondary infections.

Since your dogs are prone to developing kennel cough why don't you give them Dog-Gone Cough, an immune-boosting formula which I give my dogs as a supplement particularly during periods of stress and when they are suffering from ailments.
