I freaked out tonight! Bout an hour ago, I went outside on the back steps. We have a pool on the left of the steps close to the house. Hubby build a small platform made of wood for the pool ladder and getting out of the pool. So your not stepping in dirt. I was standing on it and it's only like 3ft by 3ft. I heard a noise and figured it was just a toad. Then i see the snake slithering just inches from my feet. Without thinking I leaped up 3 steps and ran in the house. Flicked on the light and there it was. Actually 2 of them. They were cottonmouths!!! I started freaking!! I was literally inches away from them and could have easliy been bitten the way I leaped onto the steps. Still a little shaken. Boy, that was really scary!!

So they are still out there then? I mean I don't know anything about snakes except that they freak me out.

Here's the info on that snake. I have not even looked to see if they are still out there. And I'm not planning on it. LOL

OMG.........that is scary! Glad you are ok!!

I know we went down to visit my sister in Arkansas and my brother in law stepped out the back door and nearly stepped right on a copper head (I think that is what they said it was) he killed that one (didn't want the dogs or kids to be in danger) and with in the hour the kids were screaming SNAKE SNAKE.......and it was another one just like the last!!

I'm not too afraid of snakes (i have two) but nearly stepping on a cottonmouth might freak me out a little.

I bet you had to do a pants check too! Unexpected stuff like that always gets you going- hair on the back of the neck prickling, adrenaline rush like nothing else.

Glad you didn't get bitten!

Glad you didn't get bitten. I've run into one up here in northern virginia. They can get to be a pretty decent size. One other snake you see a lot up here that's poisonous are those water moccasins... I'm not afraid of snakes... but I agree I would freak out a little if I almost stepped on a cottonmouth.

Skittle, a cottonmouth is a water moccasin ;)

I've had a few run-ins with them when I lived in Wilmington, NC. One time I had my bare foot hanging off the edge of the little 3" step down from the back porch to the back walk and I looked down and there was a cottonmouth stretched out right under my foot  I pulled that foot back as slowly and unobtrusively as I possibly could, lol . . . . and then you should have seen how fast I got the dogs back inside and slammed the door!

It's times like these that remind me why I stay in a horrendous winter climate where no self respecting poisonous snake could survive.

did they hood up? THe one and only cotton mouth i saw rasised up like a cobra and showed me his cottony mouth but even more the sides of his neck swelled a bit like a cobra. Was truely impressive, we didn't shift a hair's breath until he went back down and moved on.

ya I know they're the same thing now. I learned something new today *embarressed*

I'm still kinda new to Virginia (only been here 2 years) so I'm still learning what snakes are common in the area.
