Kili has been acting really strange all night. I've been up since about 1:30 AM (it is now almost 6 AM) because of it.

All day yesterday was totally normal. I had the day off so we did some training, watched t.v. and I went out and did errands. She was on her game in training, ate both breakfast and dinner well, bathroom activities were normal.

We went to bed around 11:30. The dogs settled in their beds as normal. At 1:30 Kili woke me up pacing to the bedroom door where we have a baby gate. Normally this means diarrhea. I got up and let her out. She had a pee and then started doing her "I have to poop" trot around the yard, but went around the corner where I couldn't see her. She came back to the door not long after and I let her back in. We went back to bed.

Except she didn't settle. She was up and pacing again within 15 minutes. I figured she wasn't done, so I took her back outside, and she seemed to have the "poop trots" again and I saw her squat. Back inside. I put her in her crate hoping that would help her settle. It didn't. She was immediately turning circles and crying in her crate. But it wasn't her usual "I really need out" crying. It was weird. Normally, if she has diarrhea she settles and goes back to sleep as soon as she's been out. She might wake up again a few hours later needing to go out, but she always settles.

Back out again. She stood outside the door for a minute and didn't seem to want to go, but after about 30 seconds she trotted off again. Back inside and into her crate. Immediate crying. Back out. This time she just stood at the door crying to come back in. So back in and I brought her back to the bedroom wondering if she was crying about being isolated away from everyone else (her crate is in the spare bedroom). Pacing, pacing, pacing. And looking agitated and suspicious. I even invited her up into bed with us which she loves. Wouldn't settle.

I thought of every scenario she might be trying to tell us about... fire, CO leak, intruder, one of us having a medical emergency (neither of us are diabetic or epileptic though)... ghosts, aliens are coming.... Finally we let her out of the bedroom to look around hoping it would ease her worries. Nope. Wandering around, checking everything out. Acting suspicious of everything. I started noticing her slipping on the hardwood floors and worrying something neurologic was going on. But mostly she seems fine, she just seems to slip every once in awhile... and it seems to me that she is startling at something (well, at nothing) and then the slip happens. Then I thought maybe she couldn't see and that's why she was startling, but we did a bunch of hand touches and she did those with no problem. She's tracking falling treats. She's making eye contact when asked. Her neurologic tests for vision are normal. She's taking treats. I trimmed her nails to see if it would help, but it didn't.

I took some video. Sorry it's so long. I tried to get the slips/starts but they aren't super frequent and I couldn't seem to catch any of the really good ones. But look how suspicious she seems of everything. This is so strange. I'm not saying she never paces, because she does when she is restless and looking for trouble, but this is different. She isn't looking for trouble. She doesn't once try to check out the kitchen counters, and although she is responsive to me, she is basically tuned out to me as she wanders around.

Everything seems okay medically other than the slipping, but again, I feel she is startling as opposed to truly neurological (I'm a vet, but I'm not a neurologist).

I can hear the pacing in the bedroom has stopped for a couple of minutes. Hopefully she'll finally sleep and wake up and be okay. I texted work and I'm really hoping I can call in "sick" tomorrow. An hour and a half of sleep is not something I can function on.

I'm definitely not a vet so your knowledge is far beyond mine, but Hugo has done something very similar once. We went to bed at 10pm and he paced and paced. I took him out 5 times through the night and he never went, he ended up pacing through the whole apartment and didn't settle until 6 am. He wouldn't eat breakfast and didn't end up eating until 3pm that day. After that he had one loose stool and then was fine.

He didn't do any sort of slipping thing, but he was jumpy and we have carpet. He may have slipped if we had hardwood. We called the vet but they said if he was eating and pooping like normal he probably just had a really bad stomach ache (He ended up having a grain allergy).

Hope Kili feels better soon!

Reading your post I was thinking maybe it could be some sort of stomach upset? Maybe she got into something that's either not agreeing with her, or maybe constipating her.

But then watching the video it seems like she's more concerned about something in or around the house. Like she's checking out the corners and everything.

The only thing I could really think of is maybe mice or other vermin in the walls/ceiling/attic? She might be hearing them scuffle around and making her uncomfortable?

Other than that, I'm stumped. Poor Kili, and poor you! I hope you are able to get the day off, and I hope that Kili feels better soon!

Have you actually seen her go to the bathroom, or just go trotting off to her normal spot and squat? My first thought was that she's constipated and can't get any relief, but that's just a guess obviously.

If she was having diarrhea, she could be really gassy/crampy. That can be extremely painful and it can be difficult to find a comfortable position.

I'm no vet but can definitely see why you'd be concerned. It really looks like she's uncomfortable, the "searching" could be looking for something to eat to settle her stomach (outdoors it would be grazing). My guys have gotten like that, but usually there's some whining and panting if there's stomach upset? Hope she feels better soon!

This was my first thought too. Maybe being uncomfortable is making her anxious? The behavior might not be related to anything actually in her environment, just a side effect of not feeling well.

I hope she's feels better soon!

Thanks guys. I took the day off and Kili settled down and slept around 7AM. We're still in bed right now. She seems pretty tired.

I wondered if her tummy was bugging her but this is the complete opposite of how she normally acts with a belly ache. She's had mornings where I can hear her stomach gurgling for hours before we get up. She just wants to lay around for hours and refuses to eat. Someone on another forum suggested bloat but it doesn't really fit with that.

A couple people on the other forum also suggested seizure. Now typically I have found that dogs with really dramatic post-ictal periods usually had pretty severe seizures. I could have slept through a mild seizure, but of she had a true grand mal I'm pretty sure I would have woken up. The dogs running in their sleep wakes me up. The other thing is that as a vet I rarely get to see the dogs immediately after the seizures. So for those of you with seizure dogs with obvious post-ictal phases, if your dog were exhibiting a behaviour like Kili (walking around, acting zoned out, seeming anxious) would they be able to perform tricks? Her hand touches were perfect, her focus was perfect. That doesn't fit to me. Also, she seemed to get worse, and that also doesn't fit for me. Initially when I thought she had diarrhea, she wasn't acting so suspicious, and she wasn't startling/slipping. That behaviour seemed to get worse.

I'm almost afraid to get out of bed in case she's still acting weird. I just want to stay cuddled in bed with my baby all day.

ETA: So she was acting totally normal. She went out and had a normal poop. Looks like she had a normal poop last night, not diarrhea. Then she went down to the basement, which is where our training room is, and the searching has started up again. She smells or senses something....

Yea... reading your description I was thinking something along the lines of anxiety... watching the video I started out thinking maybe because you'd already been worried about her you were just perceiving things oddly because she seemed like a normal dog wandering the house because her owner was acting funny.

Then she did the first slip, so I was like.. alright, well that was a little strange.. Started me thinking maybe there was something wrong with her back, or maybe a stomach ache... and then she seemed to get progressively 'stranger' to me as well...

That's strange that it started in the training room... maybe someone broke in and that's where they came into the house and she's acting anxious because she didn't see them leave??

I don't know. There's no sign of a break in, but then I noticed last night that DBF had left the front door unlocked. I haven't noticed anything missing or out of place. What's weird is last night she had pretty much zero interest in going downstairs. This morning she's been down there more than up here.

This seems to be the week everybody is getting a cold front, have you turned on any additional heating elements in your house? Poor Killi, hope you can figure it out!

Nothing has changed with our heating situation other than the furnace is probably kicking on a little more often.

I guess I'm lucky in that I've never had any odd behavior anything like that. Of course, my dogs tend to be a little odd as it is, so maybe I've never noticed? ;)

It sounds like she has a Urinary Tract Infection. It can make your dog feel like she as to go constantly, it's very uncomfortable, and it can certainly make her whine and cry and restless. Please take your dog to the vet and get her checked! She may need a course of antibiotics. You'll notice she feels better rather quickly!

Thanks for the thoughts. :) She has had her fair share of UTIs as a puppy. This is not a UTI. And I am her vet, so no worries there. ;)

As for your daily update, Kili was much better last night. She was acting funny again from about 9-11PM. We went to bed and after a little bit of encouragement I convinced her to lay down in bed with me and she didn't move for the rest of the night. She's totally normal again this morning, though not very happy that I brought her to work and let mean, crazy people (technicians) stab her with needles and suck her dry of blood (like 8 mls total). She's such a drama queen... always has been. Actually she was pretty good compared to the last time I drew blood on her. I'm hoping the lab will get me results by tomorrow, but we'll see. If that's all normal and this behaviour continues we are headed down to Calgary to see a neurologist and an ophthalmologist.

Also, interesting tidbit. I spoke to my breeder last night. She has Kili's half sister (1 week younger, same sire) and she said that about a year ago something similar happened, except that it was really obvious that something was wrong with her vision because she was running headlong into things. She was fine the next day, went to the vet and couldn't find anything, and then it happened again a few nights later (but less severe). Totally fine since. This dog has had her eyes CERF'd twice and been totally normal. She was the #7 coursing greyhound in Canada this year (so sight is obviously not an issue). Really weird. At the time it was suggested that maybe she ate something like a hallucinogenic mushroom. lol. But we're in the middle of winter right now, the dogs go out with muzzles on in the yard, and we certainly don't have anything like that in our house.
