My dogs love rawhide but would squabble over who got the "bone" shaped ones. You all know the drill with that. So, I switched over to the little "snaps" and this works well, no more fighting.

Is there anything wrong with giving rawhide for treats?

How much is too much? They usually get 4 or 5 each a week. Is that too many?

I don't give rawhide or pig ears as treats. If the dog takes a big chunk and doesn't chew it can cause intestinal blockage. Some dogs' teeth break or they get pieces stuck in the roof of their mouth. To me, it's not worth it.

No rawhide for my dog either. It screwed up my dog's digestion and too much can plug their digestive track resulting in serious health issues. In addition , they are treated with formaldehyde...

hrm, ok. two "no" in a row. I was wondering if there could be a problem as the larger of my two dogs does seem to swallow big chunks of them whole.

What's a good (and cheap) alternative?

If you are looking for treats that are good for cleaning the teeth/better breath we get 'Dental Stix'. One stick per large dog, cleans teeth and gums, is hard enough to need to be chewed but breaks apart in small pieces once it's broken. Dog biscuits are good as well.
There is one treat *can't think of the name* that has a meaty type center and a hard bone type outer shell. It takes our 5 mo old Lab a good 30 minutes to eat it. It only takes the 2 yr old about 5 minutes (she's better at chewing ;) ).

ok, I'll check out the dental stix.

Yeah, I know that treat you're talking about... our dogs both love them but are such voracious chewers that the're gone in 5 minutes or so... no fun for the dog and expensive for us ;)
