My 1 year old doxie mix loves her rawhide bones, she chews threw them like nothing, and she refuses to chew any other kind of bone. Ive heard that rawhide bones are hard to digest.. is this true? should i not let her have the bones? thanks for all the help!!

They're not hard to digest, they are *impossible* to digest. So if your dog tends to swallow big pieces of them, I would not give them anymore.

I PREFER Raw bones - but with my current living situation my dog has been making do with rawhides for now. They are okay if you supervise, supervise supervise (in my opinion). Mojo's gets a new bone whenever the bone 8" bone gets down to 3-4". Any chunks that break off are immediately thrown away - or else he gets a brand new bone.

He doesn't like kongs or any "fake" toys - like nylabones, galileos - and didn't really care for greenies. He does like bully sticks - but with his jaw power they are gone in minutes instead of 2 days.

If you are to get any kind of rawhide - get the compressed rawhide . Do not get the rolls, the knotted or the chipped.

But again no matter what you get you have to supervise like a hawk.

I wish i could go back to raw. :(

Actually you will ahve better luck finding completely raw - never been cooked - bones at your grocery store meat department. You may need to ask for them though. The bones that are sold at the pet store are not raw - they have been cooked which makes them very brittle and easy to splinter. Those can wreck as much havoc on your dog's digestive track as rawhide can.

Only thing about completely raw bones (i used to freeze mine) is they still bleed a little due to the raw marrow inside of the bone. It's best to feed them on an easy to clean surface - like wood floors, linoleum etc. They do not work with carpet - thus why I can't feed them anymore. :(

If it has to be rawhide, you are much better off with the compressed kind than the regular type.

You could also try bully sticks, they are better. :)

I like them, but are expensive. You can try the dollar store, mine carries some. :)

Midnite one time choked on a rawhide bone. She had been chewing it, it got slimy and part of it was hanging out of her mouth while the other half was down her throat. :(

Now she's a raw feed dog so she gets raw bones. The only thing that I do give her once and awhile are pig ears, but she doesn't get them often.

I don't feed any type of rawhide to my dogs. My lab gets extremely ill from regular, or compressed, rawhide so she gets bully sticks or raw bones. I spend about $15 bucks a week on bully sticks but the bully sticks that I found are thick so 3 sticks last my 2 dogs all week.
