I Have a 7 year old cocker with skin issues and horrible ear infections and I was thinking of switching him over to Raw. He is currently eating Natural Balance Venison & Sweet Potato. I've been to the vet many times and can't get over the skin issues or the ear infections with all the differnet meds he's been on. This has been going on over a year now and so far really nothing has worked. The vet suggested there vet diets and I asked to look at the ingredients and told him no way was I feeding that. He was already eating TOTW with no help but weight gain and a whole lot of poop with him only eating 3/4 cup for the whole day. So that's why I switched him over to NB. Now the skin issues have subsided some but we still have issues and his ears improved a little (a little less swollen shut) but not enough where it is manageable. I've always cleaned his ears weekly unless I saw a flare up then I would do it more often. Now for my Raw question I know you usually start out with chicken. He's had a problem with chicken dog foods before, do I still start with chicken or with a different meat? At this point all I feel like i'm doing is banging my head on the wall. :wall: Any suggestions?

Chicken dog foods, and chicken raw, will NOT be the same experience ;) What's his name? A lot of that sounds so familiar... I have soooo been there... Maddie is 8 now, and she's been on raw (off and on but mostly on) for the past 4ish years now. It's the best thing I could've ever done for her!! :D Ears and eyes cleared right up!

Now, with the infections - has there been skin scrapings and ear swabs? Is the problem yeast, bacteria, etc??

In saying that, raw won't magically 'heal' all of your baby's problems if there are other or health problems like allergies or an immune disease, etc etc.
Skin issues, ear issues, and weight gain... has he ever had a thyroid test? I'm actually going in for Maddie's second test Monday... she hasn't been feeling well :(
I actually have an appt with a dermatologist in Nov, its been a looong wait for this appt. Also banging my head on the wall!!

If he's had a problem with chicken dry food, I still wouldn't start him on chicken. Turkey is a good substitute, and it's almost as cheap to buy as chicken.

Also, sugars FEED ear infections. I stay away from sweet potato in my dogs food for that reason, and I try to stay away from beets for the same reason. After I cut a lot of sugars out of their foods by changing food they haven't had ear problems. Even my Lab.
