I know there has probably been a lot of these threads but if anyone has the time could you maybe explain the raw diet to me.

I have just read Amstaffers thread and would really like to know more, I'm going to do a search on it but I have trouble reading through lots of threads as they give me headaches. So please if you do a long reply could it maybe be split up into a lot of paragraphs as I just cant handle the big chunks of text so I end up skimming most of it (I'm not trying to be rude or picky my brain just wont focus if it's in a large chunk).

I've never really read very much about the raw diet but what are the basics? Do you need to freeze the meat or can they have it straight away? Also if you have any good links I'd love to take a look. Thanks in advance :).

Here's a place to start

http://www.mountaindogfood.com/

That's actually the site of the local raw food company that I buy from, but they've done a good job of compiling information and articles like the Jean Dodd study, studies about bacteria etc. Click on "why raw?" and "raw help" and "health care"

I would also look into pre-made raw like Nature's Variety. Takes the stress out of balancing and preparing it yourself :) www.naturesvariety.com
I have no idea how big your dogs are but Nature's Variety is probably the most expensive commercially prepared raw food available (at least here). I think it's a great food, my dogs go nuts for it so I feed it on occasion, but there are much more economical ways to feed raw that aren't too difficult. (I just don't want you to fallover from the price of NV and think feeding raw is prohibitively expensive) I agree though that sometimes starting with commercially prepared is a good way to get started. Hopefully you have a local raw feeding co-op or locally made premade that could be an option.

I agree. I used to go and buy the patties, but I was divvying them up so carefully because one pack of them cost as much as a medium-size bag of the kibble I'm feeding. But, man, did the dogs love that stuff! And I felt good about feeding it because I really like the brand name, plus it seemed to really agree with them. But for any kind of long-term or full-time feed requirements, I would seek a more reasonable option. I can pick up 5 good-sized sacks of chicken quarters for the price of one pack of NV patties.
