And what would you put the ethics at of buying rats from a pet shop?
I've been checking out rat rescues and would prefer to go that way. But the place I think I will be in makes it highly likley that I won't find a decent breeder or a rescue for atleast 300km.
Would 300km be an unfair distance to travel a rat in very hot weather?

Rats are awesome!!!!!!!! I had rats.... when I was younger. Were I not the proud staff member to seven spoiled rat eaters I'd prolly have them again. They are seriously the best small animal pet EVER!

I guess I can't comment too much on pet store buying; my rats were from the feeder bin at Petco. It's not something I would recommend, just because you're usually taking a gamble with their health, but I'm not bothered if people do. There just aren't many rat breeders out there, and shelters aren't exactly full of them either, at least from what I can tell. So sometimes it is the only option unless you're willing to drive a significant distance. If rat breeders and shelters were as readily available as they are for dogs, then I'd feel the same about buying rats at pet stores as I do about dogs. But, they're not as available, so I view it differently.

I'm thinking that distance would be a bit much, if it's really that hot out and there's no air conditioning. There are ways to keep them cool, I'd just be really worried about it... but I've never traveled with rats, so maybe I'm underestimating their ability to handle it. I got paranoid when my dad "had" to stop at Starbucks when we were on our way home from the pet store after buying my rats.

Keep the AC on and give them cool water/frozen water bottles wrapped in rags and I think they'd be okay, they're better with heat than with cold.

Yeah I had two rats a little while ago but had to get rid of them because we got a dog and we didn't have the time for the supervision they needed to be loose to play. They remind me of a personality of a cross between a cat and a dog. We used to give ours baths LOL they didn't like it any more than a cat but it made them so much healthier! We never poured water on their face though since they do upper respiratory infections easy. My daughter was good with them. It was fun making new toys for them. And if they are handled well from the get go they do not bite unlike hamsters I have had in the past.

They get growths easy too and have short life spans. The vets are extremely expensive since they are considered exotic. But it is best since you have them you have at least 2. They will take care of each other and be much healthier and happier.

Awwwww! Your rats are gorgeous!
I LOVE rats. They are my passion too!!!!!
I have been owned by rats for yrs...used to breed fancy varieties and also did some rescue. Now I just keep them as pets/family members.I only have 3 boys now.

I am the opposite of you.
I prefer males to females. The males are so much more affectionate and cuddly then girls.Sure girls have their moments and I used to have a couple of cuddle girls.but males are definatly my favorites!! I love their personalities more.As for them living together,yes...in most cases it works out.My 3 boys live together wonderfully and didn't even come from the same place or at the same time.

Had to come back again and say that I absolutly loooove ratties! Mine are soo spoiled it's not even funny! They come when called and play outside :D And are allowed full range of the house for play time, at night they get the whole closet to themselves, hehe.
