Well i bring Riot up to visit my parents and their close friends. Hes playing with Jada happily, goes to each person and visits (noses them and wags his tail at them, then playfully nibbles on some of their socks, they laugh and think its cute)..

Anyways, when they are about to go, one decides that it'd be funny to "take one of the dogs with him" so he picks up Crosbie, Cros just sits there like a good like as if hes saying "ok, where are we going :)"

Then he moves on to Riot, now, Riot having met him before KNOWS him and likes him... yet my mother decides to tell him that "CAREFUL, he may bite you," then continues to say in a higher pitched .. worry sounding voice "DONT! DONT DONT!"..

I'm standing there saying.. "he'll be fine, he wont bite!!" (I can read Riots expressions and his was saying "wait.. whats going on?") All Riot was doing was standing there looking slightly confused as to why he had started to pick him up, then his grandma yell something semi- at him and then be put down again.

it makes me furious how my mom thinks she can portray Riot as a "vicious" dog, when hes completely Not at all! Especially when hes been around these people since he was a puppy.

It just doesn't help his socilization when she meets people while shes with him and tells them that "hes going to bite if you get close" or "hes not friendly with stangers, or kids.."

Riot has gotten MUCH better then what he was. I will admit that he isn't as friendly with kids as he should be(he lets out warning growls when there are big crowds of them swarming around him, its his sign saying I"m scared, back up).
He is getting better though, he now allows a group of about 3 kids around him petting him and asking him to do tricks, which he abiliges.

Each time my mother tells people that hes vicious, they have a biased opinion of him already and then in return are fearful of him. Riot can obviously sense this!! Its just soo frustrating, when i'm trying to work with him around stangers.. and then they are already scared of touching him!

*arg*

ok.. Rant done.. Riot is not allowed around my mother when strangers are near now. i find its disrupting his socilization pattern.

yeah that sucks. My husband was like that with our old pitbull mix though when we had him. He was always telling people not to touch him or mess with him because he might bite. Anytime there were kids over he would put him in his crate because he was worried that he would bite one of the kids. Albeit at the end I was more concerned that he would bite someone and was constantly telling people not to go near him and crating him around people but it just makes me wonder if the dog would have been the way he was if my husband hadn't been like that with him. It is very frustrating.

i put bandanas that had a friendly look to them..ones with smiley faces and such when i took Bronki to city market..people took their cue from that and not from a preconcieved notion that he was a big dog and there for a possible threat. You might give it a try..then Mom's words might not stick before people get their own opinion of Riot.

Sorry your mom has that opinion of Riot. I know it makes your job even harder, but I know you will succeed. Riot is growing up to be a handsome boy.

Too bad your mom feels that way...In my family everyone calls my dogs "vicious" because its a big running joke. Like when people call the 6'6" 350lbs guy "Tiny".

When my nephews come to visit and Athena jumps all over them trying to lick them in the face (My youngest nephew is 12) they scream "oh no...Pit Attack.." When I first got Athena my Family was pretty worried (even though I raised 3 Rotts to be super friendly in the past) but it didn't take Athena long to win them over. By the time I got Sal everyone in my family realized the whole Breed "X" is naturally vicious thing is just ignorance.

ugh I hate when people are like that.

my dad also warns everyone that Coco can bite, and every time, I have to say, "No, he won't bite. he is very sweet!"

Coco never bites strangers, no matter how much they scare him. he's very polite around them.

My wife yells at me when I tell people that Sal and Athena are friendly, she wants people in the area we live in to be scared of our dogs.
