I live in texas and I just noticed on my vet's invoice that a rabies vaccination is required yearly. Is this necessary? I read that there's no real reason to vaccinate for the same thing repeatedly, and doing so may lead to over-vaccination.

Don't know about Texas but here in Indiana yearly vaccinations are required by law so it doesn't really matter. Plus, all of the boarding kennels, obedience classes, etc. require it.

depends on where you live. some states require it yearly, some every three years. it may well be effective far beyond that, but because it's a public health concern, the state makes its requirements.

Riot gets the 3yr rabies vaccine here.

As long as the vaccine hasn't expired, then the dog doesn't need it here. (Ex. if its a 1yr vaccine - its needed every year, if its a 2yr vaccine its needed ever two years).

His DHPP vaccine is every 2years though - that ISN"T needed by law here, but because Riot is so active in showing I get that for him.

I am thinking about getting his Lepto vaccine titered this year though.

Texas as a whole only requires it every three years. Some counties in Texas will require it every year though. I live in Texas too, and my county only requires it every three years.

My vet gives it every three years. I don't know if it's required that's just what the vet does for us.

Here, in North Carolina, the first vaccine is good for a year, and then every three after that. There have been several confirmed cases of rabies in our county, of course, that still doesn't convince most people to vaccinate. Required by law too.
