Okay, this is all way on hold now because of the current situation with mom. But anyways, I'd been talking to a breeder of a pretty uncommon breed that isn't known by 'non dog people' really. I'd been discussing maybe getting a pup from a litter next year. (Unfortunately the perfect litter is being born Feb, which is NOT going to work)

Anyways....I had a question.

I rent and a few breeds are banned at the complex. Now, if the people don't know the breed what happens? One reason I'm really kind of concerned is the name of the breed is very similar to a banned breed but the dogs are not remotely the same. (Think Australian Shepherd v German Shepherd) Actually, two parts of the name are similar to two very different restricted breeds. Would it be wrong to tell the apartment it was a mutt? (They honestly wouldn't know the difference) Or I thought about maybe using a different version of the name to register it with? They're called other names in other countries that DON'T sound like other breed names so much. Would that be cheating? The breed is not banned and i highly doubt it will ever be just because it's not known.

this is all hypothetical of course, I'm still looking at rescues and other breeds and breeders but it looks like it'll be a while. I'm just curious.

I think calling it by another name would be okay. I probably would. Calling it a mutt might bite you in the ass later on if they find out its not.
Or else when you apply, just have a small fact sheet/paragraph to outline what the breed is.

So... what is it?!

Ok, I think first you're going to have to quit beating around the bush and tell us what the breed is. :)

I'd think that you could probably use a shortened version of the name if someone asks you what breed it is (like the names "toller" and "staffie"), that would probably work with a non dog person. Or if there's still a problem you could show the registration papers, or look up both breeds in a breed dictionary and show them that there is a difference.

Haha, it's too far in the works to really say. There's a good chance I'll end up with something else, too. I've been talking to several rescues/breeders. This is just one option. ;) It all seems to fit, but the name does worry me a bit. The registration papers would be AKC and the name would be the one that worries me. I know I heard Zoom talk once about having problems with Sawyer because it was an Australian 'Shepherd'. The shepherd part bothers me. The other breed is just outside the weight limit. You'd think they'd notice it's not the same when they see this dog is well over 100 lbs lighter...

Okay fine. :p

I've been talking to pyr shep people. Happy? :lol-sign: I'll have one one day, maybe next dog, maybe not. I'm also looking at BCs and collies and mutts soooo....

The problem I have is Great Pyrenees are way over the size limit of 75 lbs, and German Shepherds are restricted.

The options are Pyrenean Shepherds (AKC papers would show this), Berger des Pyrenees (I'm thinking they'll think Great Pyrenees on this one), and then sometimes they're called Pyrenean Sheepdog (maybe the best bet?)

I'd go with the Pyrenean Sheepdog monicker. :) Although, it might be smart to stick with what's on the registration so you can show a printed out breed standard without confusing anyone and letting them decide you're trying to pull a fast one.

I think it's fine to use an alternate accepted name if you think the more "common" name will cause confusion. I know one borzoi breeder who told her insurance company she had borzois, they said "wha?" and she said "russian wolfhounds". They refused to insure her after that, because they "don't cover wolf hybrids". So now if someone asks for clarification she says, "Ruskaya psovaya borzaya". Everybody just shuts up and accepts it. :D

I also thought if it was a smooth I could just call it a mini aussie, lol! I don't know that I could really lie, though.

The whole 'guilty by association' thing is so annoying. Pity insurers/landlords don't know dog breeds.

This:

is nothing like this:

No apartment complex is ever going to ask for AKC papers. It shouldn't matter what the papers say.

Most complexes i've looked into have weight restrictions and breed restrictions. That means they specifically list out the dogs you can't have. No place is going to put that breed on there, so you should be fine.

I want a smooth. The next litter should be rough and smooth merle, fawn, and brindle. *dies* The one that's about the time I'm starting to look is all fawn roughs. The other breeder I've looked at only has roughs. I may try to hold out for a smooth. I've been invited to the national specialty and agility workshop but it's a long ways away. there aren't any showing around Texas so I've never actually met one, just talked and read about them. Neat little dogs- they just fascinate me. I've heard them described as a mix of aussie and sheltie temperament wise. They're very much one people dogs from what I hear, which I want after having miss socialite.

Definitely will have one and definitely will have a bc eventually. Just depends on timing and such as to which is first and if one is the next dog. We still have to make sure it's a perfect fit, of course. They're definitely not the dog for a lot of people. The breeders are being very helpful. :)

Cider's longstanding AAC agility team partner is a Berger :) I love her. They are gaining popularity here.

There is a lady in the Dallas area who does agility with one. If you would like to look her up she own "Best Friends Fun Farm" in McKinney.
