How exactly does it work? Are show dogs held to the same standards and if so, wouldn't that hinder their show careers quite a bit? Why is the quarantine so long and is there anyway to get around it?

No idea, it's just a general curiosity question. Let's say...England just for point of reference.

yes all dogs cats and ferretes (and anything else that can carry rabies) have to be quarrenteind 6 months (for the uk) in an owner paid for quarrentein kennel facility (yes they have to pay per day just like you would if boarding) before being released.
this goes for pet or show animals, animals for reaserch ect.

the ONLY exception is if your pet has a pet passport, this sytem is a record system keeping trak of what kind and when vaccines were given, blood test results ect, dogs on the pet passport then have to have a blood test so many months before travel ect, (its very involved) the whole thing takse at least 6 months to set up and costs quite a big chunk of change, however assuming you keep your petspassport up to date and do all the tests correctly it never expires and works out much cheaper than the actual quarrentein stay. with the pet passport your dog gets a health cert before flying and is given a quick check over upon arrival then is free to go, i belive currently ALL areas that require quarrentein (hawaii, UK ect) all accept the pet passport.

both vixie and dodger have theirs and ruby is in the process, its definatly worth it.
