Are they called dog periods? I have no idea.. lol My question is.. what age do girl dogs get their periods? I have heard 6 months and up. Is that true? If so, Adrienne is 7 months and has not gotten hers. Is that normal? Whats a dog period like? Do they bleed as much as humane periods? Do I need to buy dog diapers or do they sell dog pads? How long do they last? This is my first time to experience all this so any info would be much appreciated.. thanks! :D

Its called Estrus or a heat. They start anywhere from 6 months for small breeds to 18 months for large breeds. They generally bleed for approx.2 weeks.Depending on the dog you may or may not need a doggie diaper but its great for keeping your Furniture spot free. You will have to change pads in a dog diaper a few times a day depending on amount of discharge.I hope I helped you some.

Keep in mind that they can't be in contact with male dogs for weeks before they bleed and I think weeks after. Save yourself and your pup hassle and health problems and have her spayed.

Yes, you have helped a lot. Thankyou !! What are the signs when its about to start? I'll have to buy some dog diapers for her but Im afraid she'd rip it off. A friend of mine suggested I get toddler panties size 2T and put them on her.. but thats a little weird.. lol

Licking alot more often.Getting Bitchy ,her area will swell.Than you will notice spotting on your floors. It very important to keep her away from males as soon as she goes in for about 3 weeks or 4.You dont want a baby having babies. Some dogs will destroy the diapers so toddler pants are cheaper. If you wipe her area daily with TP or kleenex you should notice the color changing.

I have had dogs anywhere from 7 months old to 14 months old
before they start their cycle

they sell doggie pants at Pet stores, black leather look
I use the peel and stick mini pads in them (easy to change)

My female went into heat at 11 months old. I tried the diapers as well as boys underwear with either a diaper or a female pad inside, but my dog took them off and ripped them apart. She thought it was a new toy. I wound up cleaning up a lot. Also know that your female may have bad PMS which I didn't know about.

yep you should notice a change in behavoir, and depending on the breed sucha as a short haird versuse long haird, it will be easy to tell by the swelling on short haird breeds. i know our oldest female dobe sasha swells up big time. our little female remi hasnt yet hit that age. its time to get sasha fixed though. we have heard its better to let them go through a few heat cycles then fix them. as for molly our springer hehe i felt like a complete idiot when i call the vet in a panic as was told over the phone what it was she was going through hehe. she has also been fixed as well, although it hasnt reduced her bitchyness at all hehe.

with sasha she just plain tore off the doggy diaper hell we even tried duct tape hehe nothing she would tear it off in about 10seconds. also if you let your dogs out side dont be surprized to see strange dogs wondering around sniffing at the ground where your female has peed. its best to take a good look out side before you let them out even if you have a fenced back yard.

Ahhhh the wonderful time of heat :) Mood swings is a biggy, was for me Izzy got her 1st heat when she was 7 months old. I couldnt use anything as she to thought it was a toy and didnt like anything on her rump. I kept her in the kitchen when she wasnt outside and she didnt gou out to often. Nalla swelled up really bad, where as Izzy really didnt. Each dog is different as you know, so it will just take some time for you to get to know her when she is getting ready to come into her heat

My lab, Shiloh was 18 months when she first came into heat.
My shepherd was around a year.

The amount of blood really depends on the dog. Mine is drip drip drip. Especially when they stand up from laying down.

I don't think most people would deal with the whole process well. Not to mention having to keep any intact males and the female seperated for weeks.
Really with not knowing what to expect it is much better just to get the dog spayed.

I have never tried a diaper or pad cause with my females it just wouldn't work. It would be ripped and shredded in a minute. lol

As a matter of fact my husband has finally agreed to spay Shiloh. Yeah!!! One down and one to go.:D

They do lick themselves more, and I do the kleenex bit. It usually starts out slightly pinkish, then into bloody. Flow depends on the b*tch. It starts with a week coming in, the breeding week, and the week going out. All 3 weeks, I'd seclude the female. I used jockey shorts during the heavy flow. Now's the time to spay so that you don't have to go through this.

Gracie was 8 months when she had hers. We dont live near a pet store so I just got pullups for her. I cut a slit in it for her tail to go thru which helped with keeping the thing on her. She didnt like it but she would leave it on as long as I had that tail going thru the slit. She was very moody. Didnt want to play at all for 2wks. She'd run a second then stop and sit. Had no energy at all. She always smiles but her smile was totally gone when she went into heat. But when it comes to her "panties", she was so cute with her little dinasour panties she wore. :)
