I went into a pet store on hoildays on the way back home, it looked small/interesting, so I thought I would check it out and take my baby in (Buddie) see if theres anything I can get him for pampering/spoiling type stuff. They had puppies and kittens, etc there. I was suprised, but I think if I had to judge I would like there style of things then places in Edmonton, since I can only say that place for sure. They were in pens, and good areas, lots of pets from people, holding, attention, ones down in edmonton, are like wire or bars on the bottom and small glass incase cages, whatever they are called and no petting unless you want to hold but you need to be 18 or have an adult, unless they do a pen but thats not always, usually for bigger breeds. Anywho, there is chi's and min pin's together in a pen, I would pet them and pick up one for a bit then another, then the chi was bullying the runt min pin, I am wondering what is the correct way to fix this or help this, I know they arnt mine and such, I am just wondering as general how you fix stuff like this, my sister came in when I said kittens, and she was blocking the chi with her hand like not touching to keep the chi away, and I just picked up the chi so the little one will have some peace. I dont know if that be rewarding the naughty puppy, or your to pick up the victum pup or not, so I was just wonder as general, what to do, the lil min pin didnt do anything, wasnt bugging the chi, nothing, so I dont know what's the chi problem is, I have a guess here or there, but yeah.

In general when you go into a pet store and they have puppies kittens, parrots, etc they are from animal mills--which is why I avoid going into them (they put me in a nasty mood) and NEVER give them any money.

And I know that wasn't the answer to the question, but I couldn't figure out the question.

Yeah, I couldn't figure out the question. I think you're talking about bite inhabition? Here's a good article about it:

Pet store puppies come from puppy mills, and are usually taken away from their mothers and littermates at young ages. So it's best to NOT support any stores that sell puppies and kittens, because buying stuff from them just gives them more money to buy these poor animals.

If you are getting a puppy or a kitten from a pet store, you are probably supporting a mill operation. However, some pet stores host rescues or keep kittens, in particular, for rescues. Read to see if there is info posted next to them.

I had to stop going to the two closest pet stores because they sell puppies. It literally breaks my heart to see these cute little dogs - because I know that the sire and dam are nothing but puppy making machines.

*sigh*

Pet store puppies :(

Very sad.....Pass Pets came back to the mall I shop. They were gone for like 12 years and I thought that was a good sign, you know, that maybe people were becoming more educated........Well they are back. It breaks my heart to walk by that glass and see half of the puppies look ill and they ALL look cold and shivering.......

PLEASE don't buy ANYTHING from a pet store that sells puppies or kitties....... DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY!

I don't go to pet stores that sell dogs or cats. I love Pet Supplies Plus, so I tend to go there regularly anyways. They don't sell dogs or cats.

I was very disappointed when a local pet store near me started selling puppies. They'd had rescue kittens and cats for years, which I was cool with. But then they got these puppies in and they were not rescue. I had to stop going there . . . I made sure I told the owner why. I thought that selling puppies was considered generally unacceptable . . . why are some stores bringing it back?

Tosca: Is Pet Supplies Plus a chain . . . or do you live in a certain central Virginian college town?

Whats amazing is how many buyers are ANGREY when we tell them we do NOT sell dogs or cats.

Petco does sell fish , ferrets and small animals , birds and reptiles.

We adopt cats out weekly from local cat groups and have a computer to search for dog adoptions.

That is so strange. I mean, there are shelters everywhere . . . and the classifieds . . . and the internet. . . its not like you're stopping them from getting a pet . . . hell, you aren't even stopping them from getting a pet from a mill . . .

But yeah, I saw a hint of the same thing . . . when I worked at the aquarium store a lady came in who was very upset we didn't have kittens . . . we were like . . um . . . we sell fish. . . . and turtles . . . did you read the same of the store? If it doesn't live in water . . . we don't sell it. I just thought she was a nut.

Petco does sell Birds and Ferrets/hamsters- but most of the time the birds get sold to employees because they come in so young they are hand raised by trained staff and half the time the staff cant find the guts to put them up for sale .

They get too attached last Parrot went to the Ops manager and her son they went half cost $800.00 with discounts allot of money but when u fall in love what can u do.

Pet supplies Plus is a chain, we have them here in IN too. They are a pretty nice place to get NEARLY any brand of food.......they have Solid Gold, Eagle Pack, Canadae.......I can't even list all the foods they have. Cat & Dog. They sell NO pets at all, AND you can bring your pet with you to shop :)

I just wish ours was closer......it's about 30 miles away so I shop at our local place. Here is a linky, and they have a store locater too :)

I don't know anything about birds. Nothing. At all. I have no idea if its a good idea to sell them in pet stores. I suspect, in the case of things like parrots, not. But I can't say. I don't know.

Dogs and cats should not be sold in pet stores. I'm quite convincted of that. They should never be an impluse buy, and the mills are a blight on the nation. In the case of dogs especially, poorly bred dogs raised in filthy conditions are very likely to end up at the pound or with huge vet/behaviorist bills. So not only is it immoral, its actually rippiing off the customers who buy them . . . the sad thing is, considering how long dogs live . . . you can get one from a reputatble breeder for only a bit more than the pet store . . . and its a much better investment . . . or from a rescue, which is a bargain!

I will say that I am irritated by the people who object to selling fish and small animals in pet stores. I see their point. I really do. On the other hand, I always have a sneaking suspicion that they are the same people who would prefer if people not have pets.

I know how freaking hard it is to find a small animal breeder (and many of the ones you do find are scary) and as for fish breeders . . . they are out there, but you have to know where to look and they usually don't breed the bread and butter fish that most people want. I will walk out of any pet store where the tanks and small animal enclosures are anything but spotless and the animals anything but sleek and healthy. But this movement to keep all live things out of pet stores? Bah.

Lilavati.........I don't object to fish or small animals (birds, hamsters and the like) being sold in pet stores. I really don't know enough about them to have an opinion in either direction.

I will however object until my last breath about dogs & cats being sold in pet shops.......I have seen far too many horror stories of mills to EVER be convinced it is a good thing.

Then we are in complete agreement :D

I will say I don't mind pet stores sponsoring rescues and even keeping rescue cats on the premises . . . its too good a deal for both parties. The animals get lots of exposure to potential loving homes, the pet stores get to sell all the start-up stuff for them.

So Pet Supplies Plus is a chain. I was wondering . . . the only one I've seen was in VA, and I always stop there when driving from Alexandria to my family farm down on the NC border. Partially cause they have a great variety of chews, but also cause Sarama is with me, and its a good rest stop for her to get out a stretch and say hello to people.

I live near a place called Shake a Paw, New Jersey's puppy superstore. They are the worst offender I have ever seen. On their website they specifically say they don't sell puppy mill pups. They claim their puppies are either local, or from licensed professional breeders, whatever that means.

The one time I was in there, they had at least 70 puppies in cages, none from around here, all from notorious puppy mill states, especially Missouri.

Most of the dogs were selling from 800 to 1500 dollars, but they had one six month old boxer bitch who was terribly emaciated and had pools of diarrhea in the pan under her cage. She could be had for the special sale price of $99.00. I told the attendant they needed to take her to the vet. She said the dog was perfectly fine, and did I want to buy anything--then she stared at me until I left. What can you do about this?
