over the past few days (we decided to move my dog out to my uncles farm temporarily while the house is getting done up) my cousin brought to my attention that my 4 yr old dog has a rather large teat, as is something is under it. in the winter time when i last took her to the vets, she seemed to notice something, as i remember her saying i think that's just fat (shes a tad overweight, but the 5 mile walks are improving her atm lol). then she told me about spaying her to reduce mammary stuff etc. being the unorganised person that i am, i didnt speak to my dad about it. anyways my cousin (who is now qualified to be a vet but is taking his masters now *proud*) came home for a few days last night. i mentioned it and he said it could be cancer or whatever, very common, but he didnt take a look at her.
my other cousin said it could be a phantom pregnancy, my dads being unhelpful going its just fat, but i doubt that now, as its only on one side. the male dog there tried it on with her the other day too, so shes probs on heat.. so im wondering maybe thats a possible reason? i really dont know, im rambling on but im really worried. im getting my dad to ask my cousin again when he speaks to him, to check her, and if anything needs to be done mum and me are going to take her to the vets beginning of next week. i just feel so stupid for never getting her spayed.
so after all that rambling, can anyone help me to figure out what it is?

It's kind of hard to decipher what you were saying since everything was jumbled together with little punctuation. From what I gathered your female has teat that has a "lump" under it. If this is what you're saying, I'd suggest going to the vet.

If is was a false preg it usually happens AFTER/BEFORE a heat not during. Take her to the vet.

If she's in heat she will be bleeding and swolen "Down there"

Update

Danny (my cousin) took a look at her earlier, and said it didn't feel like there were any tumours, and that it is probably just fat, as she is eating normally and is a very happy dog. But he's going to keep an eye on her for the next couple of days.

You need to have your dog to see a VETERINARIAN to find out what this is.

I don't suggest waiting days.

Please see a veterinarian IMMEDIATELY.

I would seriously consider getting her spayed. Why would you not? IF your family member is a qualified vet than why isn't he telling you to fix her? I have been a vet tech and and animal groomer for 14 years and I have seen LOTS of mammory cancer in unspayed bitches. Also pyometra is something to worry about as well. It still isn't to late to fix her :)

Take this dog to see a vet, and make an appointment to have her spayed.

Take it from someone who lost the best dog who ever walked this earth due to breast cancer last year. :(

I will be definately getting her spayed once she loses some weight. Danny has been at uni recently and i haven't seen him for ages, and he has never met my dog so he wouldn't of talked to me about spaying. But when i last got her injections the vet talked to me about it, and how it would reduce the risk of cancers etc, but when she was younger i didn't really see the point as she was not in contact with other dogs, and the vets never talked about the risks of cancer to me when she was young. Thanks for the advice everyone. And i'm sorry for your loss Mordy.

Amy-o I would just get her spayed ASAP, forget about her losing weight right now, it can take along time for a dog to lose weight. I think that spaying her before another heat is more important. The more she goes into heat the more her chances increase for cancer and other infections. That's just my opinion :)
