I was going to order more frontline for Boris, but I'm wondering if it's really worth it at this time of year? I haven't seen any mosquito or tick since May or something...

Do you give them every month or just in the Summer?

i generally only apply as needed, even during the summer. granted, here in souther CA it's flea season all year round, but i don't like exposing my pets to chemicals unnecessarily.

this year was a fairly good one for us so far, i've only applied advantage twice since march. :)

Ok I will not bother then. Thanks!

To be honest I haven't seen a flea in the 3 years I've lived here.. There are ticks in spring but that's it. For mosquitoes, I'm always the first one to know when they're out though LOL.

Natural Flea Remedy

If you don't want to purchase any more Frontline, you may want to give this homemade recipe a try:

4. Lemon Flea Dip

3 lemons
940 ml (1 quart) water
60 ml (1/4 cup) baking soda
5 ml (1 tsp) herbal shampoo

Cut the lemons into eighths while bringing the water to a rolling boil. Add the lemons, boil for one hour, then cover and let the mixture steep overnight. Strain the solution then add the remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. Warm to a tepid temperature before applying.
To spoil your pup with the application, dip a sponge into the water and drizzle it slowly over her coat, then use your fingers to work it in using slow, deliberate circles focusing on points like the hips and shoulders.
Give her a good massage – she deserves it!
This shampoo uses citrus oil to help repel fleas, but the warm water and baking soda also help to soothe any existing irritations she may have.

I invite you to visit my site for free tips and downloads at http://www.dogdaypets.com. I sell dog books there, but it's mostly a hobby.

sadly that the lemon dip isn't very effective, at least speaking from my experience in southern california, where it's flea season all year round.

i'm all for natural care and avoiding pesticides and other chemicals, so i've experimented with a number of things, also for protection against ticks and mosquitoes for when we go hiking in the mountains.

I give until a couple of heavy freezes...I feel it's easier and cheaper to give K9 Advantix than fight any fleas ,ticks, and mosquitoes .... haven't had them for years and don't want to start. There are still the squirrels and chipmunks ...which are the main carriers along with untreated cats.

Lemon Treatment

I agree Mordy, I don't use the Lemon Dip as full time treatment. I did use it on Chaz recently as the colder temperatures are rolling in here in The Great White North. Flea season is basically over here so it gives a little added protection instead of giving him more chemicals. It sounds like Fran27 is in the same situation.

Just wanted to add my thoughts. I live in NC, where we also have fleas year round. My vet said that Frontline has the same active ingredient that's in head lice shampoo. So I use the same reasoning I'd use for head lice shampoo. If my dogs have a flea, I put Frontline on them, if they don't have fleas, I don't bother. We usually end up using it twice per year, sometimes 3 times. What I've also found is that if you have multiple indoor pets, sometimes just treating some of them will take care of everybody's fleas.......so I'd try to skip puppies and old dogs, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I've given up on Frontline, Advantage, etc. I still find fleas. I use good old flea shampoo once every two weeks (sometimes every week in the height of summer, since Zeus loves to be outside). Old fashioned, but it's worked wonderfully well. Maybe I'll try the fancy stuff again if they come up with something new.

Frontline works perfectly for me tho' I have seen fleas she gotten from my bf's dog but usually dun live long enough for me to get concern. She likes to go under bushes and all so i do give her treatment every 2 mths, there's plenty of ticks in my area and i hate those blood sucking bug grrrrrrrrr....
