Question about a breeder.

Ok, I've got a question for ya'll.

Would you pay $500 for an AKC registered Lab, with health guarantee of 1 yr for eyes/hips BUT the sire and dam have no OFA or CERF certs, pups are bred strictly for pets (don't meet conformation standards) and the sire/dam don't fit conformation standards and have not been titled. The sires/dams are all well over the weight standards (some weighing 120 lbs!). Also, the breeder has sub-classifications for "fox red", "cream" and "white" Labs...but they are the same price.

I don't plan on buying from them (as I've already got 2 and one's still a pup) but I thought I'd get some feedback as to what you all think.:D

No, I wouldn't. It's a meaningless guarantee: most dogs don't have eye or hip problems until well after a year old. And it sounds like they're in it for the money if they're trying to sell these dogs for $500.

That's what I thought as well. C'mon $500 for a pet quality pup that may end up with hip/eye problems (especially since I didn't see any mention of the parents being tested).

I emailed them and was told, "We breed for pet quality Labs...maybe you better look elsewhere...all pups cost the same." They never did answer why they had subcategories of colors.

I wouldnt buy from ANY breed who bred stricktly for pet quality regardless of prices or garentee.

Yes you will get pets in any litter be it show or working, BUT you dont breed for pets

No. Not ever. I hate seeing Labs like that. If I were to purchase a labrador from a breeder, they would have to fit the standard, be titled in the show ring, have been health tested, and also be bird dogs.

I would never pay 500 for a puppy from that breeder. That's just ridiculous...

EDIT: Wow, I just saw the pics of those dogs! Why are they soooo fat! That 120 lb bitch looks like a bloodhound with all of those rolls around her neck! That's not normal..is it???

Nope, I wouldn't buy from them. For just a little more money, you can get a quality pup from a breeder who actually cares about his or her breeding program.

Long story short, no. I'd rather get a pup from a litter like that for $50 from the shelter after they don't sell and get dumped there.

Any good breeder would offer a LIFETIME guarantee.
No cert? Dogs shouldn't have been bred at all.
Even a dog WITH a title doesn't mean they should be bred.

Ugh! I am not against breeders, but I am against irresponsible ones.

Ok, I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought it wasn't right.

I can't believe they don't even try to explain why they breed or sub categorize the colors or don't do health certs. They didn't get angry about the questions, they just didn't answer them. Maybe they are ignorant about proper breeding...not that ignorance is an excuse.

Why would you even want a "pet quality" Lab that weighs over 120 lbs? That's sooo not healthy!

absolutely not! A good friend of mine breeds some of the top labs in the country, she titles both ends, guarantees her dogs for life, and has helped with vet bills on a few of her sold dogs for one thing or another. They sell for alot more than 500$ but she is a breeder you can count on for the life of the dog and then some. I think it's worth it to find a breeder like that, not some idiot who isn't even health testing their breeding stock.

Sounds like a BYB to me... Pet quality? Give me a break... More like unhealthy mutt that has nothing to do with the breed standard.

Whats the use of breeding a dog just for pets? There are plenty of pet in the local shelters.
Thats a big thumbs down. I have ran across that site before and wasnt impressed then.
