with somethign as small as a chihuhaua or chi mix you need to get it seen to ASAP. if its been getting worse you need to take him to the vet as an emergency visit. call your vet, tell them you want him seen as an emergency case and they will usually tell you to come down and they'll squeeze you in.
Kennel cough in a 5lb'er can easily turn into phneumonia and pnieumonia in a 5lb dog can be deadly!
Especailly if hes coughing that often!

chis are also prone to collapsing treachea which can show early sighns like excessive chouging and wheezing and also needs seeing to by a vet ASAP.

Kennel Cough is generally contagious and caught on from other dogs who have had it.

Did you get this Chi Mix from a shelter? If so, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Kennel Cough.

Take the pup to a vet or just ask the shelter for the on-scene vet if they have one. They should easily prescribed medication to the dog on-site. A friend of mine was in a similar situation and that's what she did.

It sounds like what my Uncle's Shih-Tzu was doing except she only did it when she did exercise or it was hot and she was over excited. She ended up having a collapsing trachea. Of course it could be something a lot worse. Good Luck at the vet I hope it's not too serious!

What you say is worrying me. I took my Corgi out for a game of fetch yesterday and it was pretty hot and humid outside. We played for about 10-15 minutes? And then she came inside to get a drink and she started coughing. After she came inside the house it happened like 3 times and then it stopped.

Maybe she drank her water too fast and then choked on it?

What was the cough like? Phoebe's cough sounds kinda like a sneeze from the back of her throat, like she's trying to clear her throat very hard. Her face looks like she is about to sneeze, opens her mouth really wide then lets out a big cough. Some dogs with the collapsing trachea snort instead. It's more common in older dogs (but younger dogs can get it, Phoebe is only three). She may have choked on her water though, if it continues to happen call the vet. Also when you walk her use a harness instead of a collar, that is best for small dogs in general because they have fragile tracheas.

reverse sneezing (sounds like a goose with a cold) is COMMON in small breeds, this is why its reccomended you never walk them by a collar but instead by a harness due to a fragile treachea. it is common after they drink too fast or run around like crazy and is sometimes just reverse sneezing, it happens with the chis all the time and their treacheas are fine.

If its a new occurance and happening often, its time to have a vet take alook in the throat to check for any damage
If she does it in the middle of the night and it wakes her from sleep, thats when i would be getting worried.
but after drinking hard or playing hard its fairly common in lots of short muzzled small breeds.
to stop an episode cover their nose and rub their throat, making them breath through their mouth helps stop that episode, as i said though just like with any newly occuring cough or sneeze, if its a new occurance off to the vet for a quick look.

Benji (20lb terrier mix) does that reverse sneezing thing now and again. We always walk him on a harness cause his throat is sensitive. I've known a lot of little breeds with sensitive throats.

It sounds like the run of the mill kennel cough to me. There is really nothing you can do until the dog sees a vet and starts meds. I would keep him/her quiet, inside, basically just lay low. It is VERY contagious...more emphasis on VERY, to other dogs. It is spread by bodily fluids. I'm a big fan of researching so here is a link that will tell you more about what your dog MIGHT be experiencing...

Hi Lila... welcome to Chaz! Where is Koli? You have a lovely puppy. At 8 weeks of age, a recently adopted pup from the shelter and one that had Kennel cough when you adopted him, it is very likely that it has not completely cleared up. Not to worry, your vet will help. Often this can turn into a secondary infection though, so it is good you're taking care of this asap. As another poster mentioned, it is very contagious, but it is actually an airborne virus. So if you have other dogs, you will need to do more than make sure they don't exchange body fluids. You will need to separate them and keep all of your dogs from other dogs for several weeks. They can become a carrier with no symptoms. Your vet will explain this to you. Look forward to more pictures! Good luck.
