Hi everyone,

I was taking care of puppy pitbull about 8wks old for my g/f cousin. She was sick and we didn't think her cousin was responsible to take care of a sick puppy, so we took her to the vet and I nursed her back to health within a week. She was active, playful, eating, pooping, peeing, and not vomiting anymore. I felt it was healthy enough to give back to the cousin and we just instructed him on how to give the puppy the medication, well I dropped her back off to him on Friday but on Sunday, the puppy suddenly died. It couldnt have been something that happened while I had her could it? I watched her really carefully and always crated her when I couldn't watch her. Plus, she was really active and playful by the time I dropped her off. It wasn't until I gave it back when it got sick again. The cousin doesnt crate her and lets her roam around the house while they sleep, he also was only giving her the medication once a day instead of three times but I'm not sure that would kill a puppy. I'm thinking she must have gotten into something she shouldn't have and got sick. Anyways, may Sweets rest in peace, I feel so bad.

Poor puppy!

If it makes you feel any better, the not following medication can have a pretty big effect on a dog, especially one that young. Vomiting causes dehydration and that can kill a pup pretty quickly.

Yes, I believe Parvo was brought up by the Vet as a possibility. So missing doses of her medication may have been the cause? If so that makes more sense. :(

parvo is very serious for a puppy. If not caught early enough it can be deadly. The pups wind up so dehydrated from all the vomiting and diarrhea. They need vet care and lots of iv fluids usually to pull through as well as the medication. If it was parvo and they decide to get another pup... they better make sure they clean anywhere and everywhere or the next pup will likely get it too.

My 3 year old dog freddie was around that puppy, is Parvo contagious? I don't notice any symptoms so far from him.

Aww thats very hard to go through!

I dont *think* it was something that you did, it sounds like you tried to do everything you could to help the puppy.

If they let the puppy roam unsurpervised it could have gotten into something poisonous, could have eaten something undigestable. LOTS of things could have happened.
Rest In Peace Sweets.

If it was Parvo, you have a serious issue on your hands for Freddie. Parvo is very contagious and can live in the soil for up to a year. If the puppy had diarrhea in the yard then you must make sure it's all cleaned up and no new dogs come in contact with your yard for one year. Same goes for your cousins home.

I am sorry this happened:(

Parvo is extremely contagious. You and your cousin should disinfect EVERYTHING in your houses and do not bring another dog into your houses or yard for at least a year.

Sometimes puppies with parvo can go into sort of a remission, but the virus is still there and will come back worse than ever. Even thought the dog seemed fine it was still actually sick and should have been in the vets on IV's and getting meds.

If Freddie shows any symtoms of parvo, for examply, lethargy, not wanting to eat or drink, vomiting or diarrhea, GET HIM TO THE VET ASAP!!!!

I commend you on doing what you did for that dog. Good for you.
