Okay, so I went through a similar thing when I first got my dogs (we got my first lot of 5 puppies when they were only 4 weeks old, the second lot of 4 when they were just over 2 weeks old and the last two lots were 4 weeks as well). The first lot of 5 were potty trained really quickly and learned to go on newspaper placed in the corner of the room. Great, right? Except that when the boys would get up to go pee, the girls would wake up as well, and CHARGE after them and start... well... sucking on them... I suppose it felt like a teat to them, I don't know. All the other pups sort of did this for a while, which I could understand since they were so young and were being fed with a dropper and all. It became a standing joke with us though, because if you didn't stop the girls, the boys would wind up with these huge (and I do mean HUGE for their size) erections. So every once in a while one of us would hear these loud, frantic sucking noises and jump up screaming, "puppy porn puppy porn!" and go rescue whichever poor boy was being violated at that point.

Sorry for the overly long explanation, but here is my problem - my new lot of 7 puppies (age 18 days) are starting to do the same thing - they'll feed off their mom just fine, but once in a while we'll hear these "pach pach pach" noises and they'll be sucking on each other. Is this normal behaviour? If not, how do I stop it? Thanks much and sorry for the graphic description - I don't know how else to describe it!! :)

yes...it is normal. I have fostered many pups and kittens and I have run into this more than once. Usually happens more when there is no mom though. the only thing that can be done is to seperate. I had one poor kitten whose...um..private member...was red and irritated. I ended up removing him from the rest of the lot until they were a little older. If anyone else has any other ideas i would love to know to, since I will probably have another batch myself soon!

I can't really separate them though - they need to learn socialising thoroughly because at least two of the litter will be integrated into the existing pack, plus if I take ANY of the puppies away, and they squeal, their mom gets totally frantic and upset... and I'm really attached to her and if she cries I cry (don't laugh, I'm serious!).

Well, if they are not causing a problem (like my kitty example) its not really a problem. I had no choice but to remove that one for medical reasons. He was the only one I had to do that for...None of the others was that extreme. Just keep an eye and make sure that isn't happening.
I would never laugh at you !:)

That is sort of rude. Maye this has never happened before with other litters!

Sheba the first sentence of the post kind of states that this has happened before --

"Okay, so I went through a similar thing when I first got my dogs (we got my first lot of 5 puppies when they were only 4 weeks old, the second lot of 4 when they were just over 2 weeks old and the last two lots were 4 weeks as well). "
Personally I think this is a bit of a hoax... or maybe a byb... elsewise if it's a rescuer I think you'd be asking the people you are working for instead of an online dog forum. But that's just my opinion.

Debi, Mojozen & Bubbatd:
Why would I waste everyone's time by posting a hoax? The previous litters came to us when they were very young, did NOT have a mother to feed from, which is why I wasn't too worried. The new puppies DO have a mother, and I was wondering why they seem to be exhibiting the same behaviour when they feed off her just fine.

I don't work for a rescuer. My family and I happen to love dogs beyond belief, which is a sentiment I thought was shared on this forum. This is why I posted here. I can't really get much help from anyone else since no one I know has even tried to bring up so many dogs (the current count stands at 13 full grown and 7 puppies) that aren't pedigreed and that aren't for breeding purposes.

If you check out a couple of threads I started previously you'll see that I am not joking.

Sheba & Shepluvr:
Thanks for your help! You can see photos of my babies on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kishmish/ - I don't have all the dogs up yet but I'm working on it. Toosh is the mother btw.

sorry. your original post didn't sound sincere, but I see that you are. wording with 'puppy porn' just sent up red flags in my brain. LOL

Don't worry about it Debi! I seem to be on a shorter fuse these days because of sleep deprivation! "Puppy porn" has become a sort of inside joke with my family and I just didn't think when I used it as a title! No worries! :)

Hi Nedim,

They're an Indian breed called Bhutia. Some of them are also called Gaddi (the short haired ones). They're used up in the mountains to protect shepherds and their flocks from leopards and other predators. They aren't quite recognised as a pedigree though, but they should be!

I'm glad you like them - keep checking back on flickr - i'll be posting more (I have only 3 dogs up so far and I have a total of 13, so 10 more to go!)
