I am feeding my 5 month old Innova Puppy, slowly moving him over from Science Diet. Now he is on 3/4 Innova and 1/4 Science Diet.

But, his poo has started to look kinda weird. It is not uniform, there are pieces of a lighter colour, they are almost like undigested seeds, but they can't be because we are not feeding him anything else.

Anyone know where this would come from? Or could it be something else causing this?

Anybody else with a puppy on Innova, how many times a day do they do their job?

He has gone from doing it 4 or 5 times a day on his previous food, down to 1 or 2.

Is this normal, or is he constipated?

Mine poop once or twice a day also. Less filler = less poop.

And I wouldn't be surprised at all if they got diarrhea, there's a big difference in quality from science diet to innova and their digestive system needs some time to adapt. Boris had diarrhea for 2 weeks when we switched him to a much better food.

Are you feeding Innova Puppy or Evo? I have got mine on Puppy.

We have him switched over completely now and no diarrhea. It is a bit softer than it was on SD, but still quite firm.

I don't have a puppy but if you add a tiny bit of canned pumpkin it will help the poo be a bit more consistant. That at least works for my own dog - and pumpkin works just as well on diarrhea as well as constipation.

My own dog went from having big messy poos to small firm poos on the pumpkin + innova combo. Plus he just LOVES the pumpkin. He does a happy dance whenever i dish it up. :D

Hmm.. his stools are not runny, but I am noticing a clear discharge along with his stools. I wonder if this is still part of the adjustment process.

mojozen, thanks for the pumpkin tip, i will give it a try!

If you have any doubt, take a sample to a vet to make sure there isn't nothing abnormal. What do you mean by 'discharge'?

Well, it is a clear liquid surrounding the stools, similar in look and consistency to saliva. Maybe 'discharge' is not exactly the right word.

The clear liquid is something normal - my pooch does it too... what it is a musky liquid from his anal glands. That he's expelling this when he poops means he's healthy!

When they can't expel it they will spend a lot of time licking the anus trying to expel it that way (the sacs are just inside the anus actually) and this CAN cause them to get infected. It's not a smell that's very pleasant, it's kind of a copper-fishy-hard-to-describe-smell but one you won't forget!

It's best that if this were to happen (the anal sacs do not expel the oil/liquid inside them when the dog is pooing) to take them to the vet to have them expressed - as you can tear the anal sacs if you try to do it yourself -- and that does cause them to get infected.

Don't worry about the clear liquid that drips out at the end of a potty session - it just means your dog is acting healthy.. and is poo is of a proper consistency. :)

Great! Thanks for the detailed explanation.

I never thought I would be becoming an expert on puppy potty. LOL!
