Hello,
My 9-month old lab mix has been on Canidae since June. She has had GI issues every few weeks and the vet has ruled out obstructions, worms, fevers, etc. and seems to think that she may be allergic/intolerant of the food.

The vet prescribed Hill's/Science Diet I/d. Looking at the list of ingredients, it doesn't look like something I would want to continue giving her. What else do you suggest that I try?

Also, any suggestions on what I can do with the almost 10lbs of Canidae that I still have? Do you think the pet shop will take it (maybe get some good food into those poor puppies at least?).

Thanks,

The pet store may take it back, depends on their individual policies.

I would consider doing an elimination diet and see if you can narrow down exactly what in the Canidae is causing the problem.

At the very least, try a commercial food with a single protein and single carb source - something like California Natural.

Of course, whether you choose to do a true elimination diet or try something like California Natural, go for a novel sources of protein and carbs.

I should ask, too, what, specifically are the GI symptoms she's displaying? Do they seem to happen during or after activity?

Hi,

My dogs were having the same issues on Canidae... we went to the vet a million times and ruled out everything possible.

We have since put then on FROMM, the duck variety and they are doing GREAT.

Its really a matter of just trying different things and finding out what works.

Good Luck.

Canidae does also have a lamb and rice (single protien/carb) and chicken and rice formula. The one issue I have with their ALS formula is just how many different protein sources they have...making it very difficult to narrow down what might be causing an issue. My lab Virgo had vomiting issues while on Canidae; switching her back to Innova Adult has cleared those up.

type of upset

To the above poster's question: Specifically, she was having diarrhea every 3 weeks or so. She would respond well to rice/bland diet and meds and then get it again 3 weeks or so later.

Have you noticed if it happens specifically after more activity?

When she has these bouts, given the fact that you are giving a bland diet and meds, I assume the bouts continue without treatment?

I would definitely look at a simpler diet - I'm assuming she's currently on Canidae ALS? Maybe try their Chicken & Rice - it is far simpler and the protein levels are better than California Natural's chicken and rice.

I would also recommend adding a probiotic to her diet.
