Puppy hiccups or respritory problem?

Recently I noticed by puppy has been making some strange noises when he's sleeping or laying on the ground.

Sometimes his breath is just more audible and somewhat "sniffy" sounding. Like if you breathe through your nose audibly. Other times it sounds like a muffled, quick "Mmphh" spasm sound..almost like hiccuping in a real soft, quick puff of air with your mouth closed.

I want to take to the vet for it but he doesn't do it all the time...usually just when he is resting, tired or just waking up and laying on the ground. So I'm thinking/hoping it's a normal or harmless thing.

I took Roxy to the vet because of something similar.

She laughed at me! Puppies apparently get hiccups like you've mentioned. No biggy. If it's really bothering next time your at the vet just ask.

It doesn't sound like a big deal though.

Riot got puppy hiccups ALL the time.. it was soo cute.. he'd be laying there stretched out gazing at me and then "HICCUP" "hiccup" "hiccup" lol At first I freaked.. and then realized he was only hiccuping hehehe

No worries :) Sometimes they sound worse then they really are!

The hiccups in our case occured when Tira was young and growing and now with Gunner (only 4 1/2 mo and still growing). I don't know if it's a growth spurt thing or what...but hiccups are fine as long as they aren't doing it so much they can't catch their breath. :) It's possible he could be "woofing" in his sleep...ya know, chasing a dream and talking in his sleep. :)

Brinley always hiccups when she gets overly excited or running around like a crazy pup. It looks just like a human hiccup and last for about 10 minutes or so. Be sure what you hear isnt a wheezing or caughing (distinct difference). My puppy had Kennel cough and at first I just thought she was wheezing from the blanket or something (thought she was allergic). But later realized she was coughing....this is something she needs to go to the vet for to get medicine. Kennel cough is the dog equivalent of bronchitus and needs ot be treated. Hope that helps.

The hiccuping, though, is no big deal and actually pretty cute.
