We have a new puppy who is 11 weeks old now and weighs about 9 pounds or so. She is eating Canidae life stages. I've been giving her 3/8 of a cup of food morning, noon, and evening. In the morning, I try not to feed her before 7 a.m. because I would prefer that eventually she adjust to a 7 a.m. waking time. So, right now she hangs out with me in the bathroom between 6:20-6:50 while I shower and so on. She has a bloody raging fit the whole time we are in there because she wants to be fed. Is she just being a silly slightly stubborn and cute baby, or do I need to be feeding her more?

My guess is that she is genuinely hungry. I think I would feed her as soon as you get up, but then delay the getting up time a bit every day once she gets a little older. I don't think it's worth fighting about at this age, and she may actually learn to be a pain until you feed her, which is a much bigger problem to fix :yikes:

I agree, she's probably genuinely hungry. I'm the same way - I'm always really hungry right after I get up, whether I get up at 6:00 or 9:00, and regardless of when I ate the night before.

I'd suggest, too, feeding her while she's in the bathroom with you in the mornings. You can even put the food in a treat ball or food dispenser so that it takes her a while to eat (keeps her out of your hair) and she has to use some mental energy.

Ok... I'll just start feeding her when I'm showering then. About the treat dispensers, is there one you recommend? We got the cube one for our big dog when she was young and then found out that on hardwood it wouldn't turn and she just got frustrated and unhappy. Poor pup!

That's interesting, I've used the cube ones with dogs on tile floors and they're ok. Although I will say that the cubes are very difficult.

I like the "talk to me ball," it's at Petsmart. It's hard plastic, and very slippery so I've never seen a dog be able to chew on it (as long as it's not too small). There's another one I think at Petsmart too, it's a softer plastic, kind of looks like a really big, orange golfball. Those are good too, and cheaper than the others, but if your dog likes to chew he'll be able to chew on it.

I also like to just use a plastic bottle - water or juice bottles, milk jugs, whatever.

This is interesting, how do you all know she wants to be fed? Please share with me! :)

And how many times a day do you feed her? I think the general guidelines is to food a puppy three meals/day. If it's too long in between feedings, she could be really hungry!

There are many times when we don't know for sure what's going through our dogs' minds. But, I think it's safe to assume, that a puppy is going to be hungry first thing in the morning, and if nothing else, feeding her will keep her from "throwing a fit" in the bathroom. If she continues the fit after she eats, then it is probably something else and we can try again.

I agree - if your puppy is "throwing a fit" its because she is genuinely hungry. Most puppies don't react that way unless there is something that they really want.....I would for sure adjust her feeding time.

Thanks all! I'm just feeding her in a "food ball" now while I shower. She still doesn't quite get it, but she didn't pitch a hissy this morning while I was getting ready. I appreciate the advice!

Interesting, thanks. I've never had a puppy throw a tantrum for food, so this is news to me. :)
