My brand new pup, Zoe, is a rescue. While in her foster's care she received two treatments on Strongid (sp?) which ended during the middle of last week. Just now I was walking her and she did her business. When I went to pick it up with my baggy I saw one of those spaghetti looking worms. After my initial thought ("ewwwww!") I started wondering if she needs a third treatment of deworming. Now, we are going to the vet this week but I am impatient and was wondering if anyone here had an answer.

Is this leftover from her deworming and she is just getting rid of the last bit (I hadn't seen any Friday or Saturday) or are we looking at round 3? I believe the other puppies rescued from the same place had to go through 3 rounds of deworming but the original vet said Zoe was not as wormy and just needed two rounds.

It may be leftover from the last round, or she may need another round. I'd bring it up when you go to the vet.

Ewww, roundworms are SOOO disgusting.

I do agree, though, it could be leftovers or it could be that she needs a third deworming. As gross as it is, it's not an emergency, just something to discuss when you're taking her in anyway.

Meh, your vet did nothing wrong. If it is indeed roundworms (and not say, whips), then the strongid dose 3 days on, wait 2 weeks, 3 days on, done is an appropriate way to do things. Sometimes you don't kill every little worm with it, depending on how heavy the infestation was.

Most vets prefer 3 rounds because the life cycle can vary dependent on mode of transmission so if you do 1st round, wait 2 weeks, 2nd round, wait 2 weeks, 3rd round, you should get it all.

Additionally it may have just been a left over body that you found.
