So happy to see them, awh. Just adore those little tails, wish they were kept more often. Can't wait to watch the litter grow. :D

That IS really neat. Is there a reason that their tails get docked? (Curious, don't mean anything negative. I don't know the breed standard).

Congrats on the beautiful litter!

Congrats on the beautiful litter!
Three reasons for modern docking of this breed (not saying they are good or bad reasons, just reasons.)

#1 It's required by the breed standard
#2 Tradition
#3 Making them all the same length so the breed is more uniform.
#4 least of all, easier grooming on working dogs, if it's gone you don't have to cut burrs out of it obviously. At least that's been my experience having the only bob tailed dog on a SAR team full of Golden and Flat coated retrievers.

These puppies will be banded today.

Beautiful Jellybeans :)

I am looking forward to seeing them turn into tiny, fluffy dogs!

Good work, Lark :)

I only just now updated myself on the new photos of the pups, and CONGRATS again! They are so tiny and good. ;; And LOL at chunky puppy Raven- I can imagine her robust and glorious like her dad when she's older.

I never see breeders compairing tail lengths in photos and I wish they would so I will!
This IS really interesting! Thanks for doing this.. Dang, pretty Owl and that long taily. (Honestly wish I could bring home Martin... hnghhh)

More photo updates, whenever you happen to have time, please. :'D

Some better photos. Lark is NOT happy when I take her pups away for photo ops. And Martin isn't either he has been a noisy little thing from birth!

Banded = tight band on tail to make it fall off?

They're adorable!
Yep exactly, tiny little bands, they cut off circulation to the tail which first makes it go numb and eventually dries up and falls off. They are treated daily with betadine to make sure nothing gets infected.

Here is a photo from the whelping box cam just now.

I totally understand. I would nom that little nose, too.

Can I ask why you went with banding over a traditional snip? I really know nothing about the methods, so I'm curious.

I have seen both done and the amount of screaming and crying in a traditional snip vs the totally silent banding is one reason.

Another reason is that I was not able to get information on any vet who had a good track record on docking tails the correct length. Two breeders I spoke to in the area had only negative stories to tell about the vets they used for docking (one docking too short, the other docking too long and had to get the puppies docked again) and a third breeder said she only has her friend dock her puppies.

Final reason was because one of my mentors has done it to her past 4 litters and strongly encouraged me to try it.

Wow! Sounds like a much better option! How easy is it to band in the right spot?
