dr2- never said it was mature...what's your point?
Honestly, I think that you and many others when posting about mixed breeds, start out with good intentions and then totally loose the point of it all. What ever happened to trying to educate? And, I guess I shoud appologize...when reading this "buzzards to a carcus" show, your post just nicked a nerve. It really wasn't your post alone.....
We all have our opinions and yes this is one of the subjects that we're passionate about but when we (I've done it myself) resort to below the belt stuff with younger members, I just want to pack it in.

Personally, I like all dogs regardless of breed/mix. It's not the dog's fault, the way it was bred. However, I also think that there are enough dogs out there that need homes that it is sad to intentionally create more. I'm not talking about "responsible breeders", but BYB or people who just don't care and let their dogs run loose who are not spayed/neutered. JMO

Regardless if Puggles are designer breeds (same with Labradoodles, etc), those dogs still need homes. It's kinda a catch-22, noone wants to promote the BYB and buy their dogs, but at the same time what will happen to those dogs if noone buys them. True the BYB may then stop their breeding, but what happens to the dogs they have and can't get rid of? It's a sad situation all the way around.

They are cute dogs and very sweet but be ready for a dog that stays hyper well out of puppyhood. They are VERY mischeivious and are quite the barkers. I don't own one but have worked with over 20 and there seems to be a consistant pattern of trouble makers :) Very cute and energetic though.

Oh crap I am reviving this thread and probably starting trouble but I have to say this....

How on earth can you think my dog is ugly? Some puggles are funny looking but can anyone really say Davey is ugly??

Jessiep,
I don't find a problem with most puggles looks.

It's more the fact that people breeding them are unethical and they come from unhealthy BYBs.

The people on Chaz have good intentions, but some can occasionally go overboard. Please excuse them, as it really is a great community.

Your Davey is a sweetie :).

Personally, all designer breed crap aside, I think they are ugly as all hell.

 What makes you say that? I own a mixed breed, and I love her very much. She's GORGEOUS. Not ugly at all....that's absolutely awful for you to say so. And it upsets me very much. I don't agree with the breeding of mixes, but that doesn't make the dogs that are bred "Ugly." NOTHING is wrong with a mixed breed....it's breeding them purposly that is wrong.

My dog is NOT ugly.....

Lovely sunny Perth! :-)
Right on!! :hail:

I think the people here need to go help the homeless guy down the street instead of sitting here pissing and moaning about BYB. I know this makes you feel good about yourself, but get over it already.

If everybody who gets a dog would just take care of the **** thing, none of this would even be an issue. But instead, people see dogs as an object, not a life. Oh, somethings wrong with my dog, better bring it to the shelter cause I don't want to pay the bill. You idiots going to give away your children too if something is wrong? Don't think so. **** happens, be an adult and take care of your dog as if it were your child.

Getting a dog should be a life long commitment, no matter what! I don't know how many animals i've had in my life, and they've all been with me till the end.

I must go play with my 3 puggles now. :D Flame away!!! :lol-sign:
Wow - that was a really unkind post, and kind of self-contradictory. We all totally agree with you about dogs being a lifetime commitment, absolutely! And our whole fight about BYBers is because THEY are the ones who treat dogs as objects - not us! Why on earth would trying to stop BYBs `feel good about ourselves'. We don't get angry about BYBs for ourselves! Goodness, if every dog bred by a BYB could find a loving home, till the end, EVERY one that is the result of a BYB, I'm sure we'd all have a lot less to say about it!

Our argument is EXACTLY what you said - looking after your dog like it is your child. BYBs don't do that - they do exactly what you are criticising us for! I would have thought you would be on the side of being against BYBs, not for them. And there is not one person here who would abandon their dog because there was something wrong with it. Again, that is something a BYB would do - not anyone here. We do love and view our dogs as our children. Again, your post contradicts itself and I don't really get it.

And Brem, people who have different opinions to you are not snobs - they just don't agree with you. Not everyone has to agree. Being against animal cruelty is not snobby either, and BYBs perpetuate animal cruelty.

I see what you meant by your OP - all you said is that they are cute. `I want one!!' - well, I say that all the time when I don't really want something. Just because it's kind of what you say when you think something is EXTRA cute. But people here are very much into looking after their dogs and wanting to save the dogs of the world, don't be angry at us for caring, try to see where we are coming from - and I think that works both ways, too.

Here's what I think..

I believe there is a purpose for Labs and Poodles. Labs are great family and hunting dogs, and Poodles, as well as Labs, are very intelligent. People wanted to create a very family oriented, loyal, smart, quick learning dog.

But Puggles?? Beagles are great dogs, especially for hunters..hunters in England (ehehehe jk)Very smart, and have great noses. But then you cancel out the great nose with an ugly Pug nose that the dog can't even breathe thru. Doesn't make sense. Pugs are just companion dogs, that in my experience, are lazy dogs. (NO OFFENSE!)
So mixing the two do not make sense.

Anyway, that's just Liz's oppinion, so ignore it if you'd like.

i had a man tell me about the dog he and his wife bought, akc registered, in harrisonville mo. It was what was it he said..a cockapoo. THat is why you shouldn't buy a puggle. If that makes any sense at all. IF you really want one i am sure there are a zillion in rescue right now. Please do not encourage these cross breed puppy mills or by breeders for that is exactly what you would be doing. They overbreed, lie, and ship babies too young, too sick, too stressed, they are the dog's worst enemy which is why everyone here has a knee jerk reaction to anything they produce. I didn't tell them man, the dog he spoke of is long gone by now, but it did express my point. They lie. They don't care about good genes. And most of all there are too many dogs needing good homes. Check out www.petfinder.com and i will bet a pretty penny that you will see at least 10 puppies of mixed OR not origin just as special.

I agree, smkie. I suppose there's nothing wrong with wanting a pug/beagle cross. But instead of supporting the BYBs go and save a shelter dog. With the designer dog overflow there are tons of unwanted "puggles" in shelters.

I don't think Pug/Beagle crosses are ugly, but I am sad that they exist. It makes me sad that both the pug and beagle breed are being exploited like this and poorly bred just so puppy producers can fill their back pockets.

I can't imagine mixing these two breeds can have a good outcome most of the time. You have a toy breed that's sole purpose is a lap warmer on one side and a higly driven hunting hound on the other. This makes for disaster if you ask me.

I find it really sad that so many pug/beagle mixes are ending up homeless now. Just goes to show how little research people put into getting a dog. Seems so many people just want a "fad" breed and when they hype is over, the dog gets dumped.

I'll always love the argument that the so called "Puggle" is healthier than the pug. If pugs are so unhealthy than breed to improve their health, but don't creat a new breed. I am around hundreds of pugs on a regular basis and contrary to popular belief, they are quite healthy, they don't breathe heavily and they can hold their own with the best of them...

People will always breed designer mixes. People will always put their own intentions and greed before the needs of the dog and dogs will always end up homeless in shelters. I just hope that with enough education, people start to actually care about the welfare of dogs and realize the role they play in the big picture even if they are JUST buying a cute puppy :(

Dixie, what kind of a mix is your pup? She's adorable! I can see the yorkie, but I'm not sure what else! :)
I'm not her but I think her dog is yorkie/silky terrier ;) I think she's adorable, too, Dixie! :)

I knew I was stirring up trouble...

There are good and bad qualities of any breed, no? And mutts are everywhere- that is natural, isn't it? Given the freedom to breed at will won't most dogs breed with whatever dog is available? It isn't mixing breeds that creates the problem, it is human greed.

FYI Dulce- my puggle has a great nose, very beagle worthy, and no breathing problems. Additionally, puggles are very high energy and not at all lazy.

i am suprised in the difference of the three dogs that were posted on petfinder. The point isn't that you are wanting a dog or not, it is that you are feeding a part of society that is in the overall view of canine life on earth, causing harm. I am sure their are delightful puggles out there, but they had bad creators and until the population is under control where good dogs are not being put to death every single day, then any breeding imo is not a good idea. THat said, i do appriciate the breeders that stay to the true line, and breed responsibly..those breeders do NOT CROSS.
