Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. :)

About 4 days ago, my dog Max hurt himself quite badly while chasing a ball up at the local field. He slipped a disc in his back, and is now on anti-inflammatories and lots of rest; he is slowly getting better, and can walk around a bit. But now, we have a problem where he is scared to go outside into the garden. He has been doing his "business" inside (though for the first 2 days he was OK to go out and do it). We really don't know what to do to stop him doing this. I don't know if we are putting too much pressure on him to go outside; when we try to coax him out, he gets very scared and doesn't move. He won't even follow me outside if I have a treat for him, which is very unusual. We leave the door open so he can just go out when he needs to, but he won't. Does anyone have any advice on how to get him so he goes and does his business outside again? The only thing we are thinking is to pick him up, bring him out and stay outside with him until he does his business, but when we have done that, he doesn't want to go.

Is he somehow associating his injury with "outdoors", and that is why he is scared?

Any help/insight would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Well, this is typical. :lol-sign: About 20 minutes after posting this, I went out to read a book, and he followed me out and did a poo and pee in the garden. It's strange - I'm thinking maybe he was constipated, because he went just before I made my original post, and now again about 30 minutes later. Both times, there was a fair bit of poo, and it was very hard and in round balls. I'm hoping he has got it out of his system (as he hadn't gone at all for about 30 hours), and will slowly adjust back to his normal routine. :)

:lol-sign: See... posting on Chaz really helps! LOL
I'm glad he went in the garden. I hope his injury heals well, and Max feels better soon!

I am so glad for your boy! But I think you might have been right in your first post, that Max was scared to go outside for a while after his injury associating it with garden somehow. You know, we had quite similar problem with Maggie after New Year Eve, when she was deadly scared of fireworks during walk, then next 3 days she flatly refused to go out and she did her business on the rug in front of the door:) When we brought her out she just stood still and tried to rush home at any opportunity. But in 3 days it was back to normal:)

Wish Max to get well ASAP!
