Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can give me some advice.
About 4 days ago, my dog Max hurt himself quite badly while chasing a ball up at the local field. He slipped a disc in his back, and is now on anti-inflammatories and lots of rest; he is slowly getting better, and can walk around a bit. But now, we have a problem where he is scared to go outside into the garden. He has been doing his "business" inside (though for the first 2 days he was OK to go out and do it). We really don't know what to do to stop him doing this. I don't know if we are putting too much pressure on him to go outside; when we try to coax him out, he gets very scared and doesn't move. He won't even follow me outside if I have a treat for him, which is very unusual. We leave the door open so he can just go out when he needs to, but he won't. Does anyone have any advice on how to get him so he goes and does his business outside again? The only thing we are thinking is to pick him up, bring him out and stay outside with him until he does his business, but when we have done that, he doesn't want to go.
Is he somehow associating his injury with "outdoors", and that is why he is scared?
Any help/insight would be very much appreciated.
Thanks for reading.
