I have an 11 week old puppy and I was ondering if it would be okay for him to have the pressed rawhide bones? Also is there another product that you guys would recomend. I have considered Kongs, Bully Sticks, and raw bones. What do you guys think?

hi there , i highly recommend oral care chews , you have to buy them at the vets , the brand is enzadent by vet solutions. they are a good chew and help keep their teeth clean. i hesitate to recommend a rawhide as some dogs have gotten them lodged in their teeth, choked on them, not digested them properly. i stay away from the rawhides altogether. :)

I personally have never let Loppi come in contact with rawhide. The same day I brought her home, I stopped by the pet store to grab a few things and a girl there told me about this one lady's dog, who was constipated and wouldn't eat for a few days. One day, she pulled a LONG "string" of rawhide from her dog's butt, realizing that the rawhide didn't really digest - it just caused a blockage in the intestine. Not sure how true this is but I've always played it safe.

My mother used to be a Vet and has since retired. She now has her own kennel where she raises Irish Wolf Hounds. She has told me time and time again do not get any rawhide at all. The blockage and digestive problems with it are true.

Rawhide is a huge No No! Riots never been in contact with rawhide, too many issues with it. Its NOT digestable for dogs and can cause serious issues and possibly surgery.

Bully Sticks are what I give my guys, as well as raw bones now. The raw bones are a great "tooth brush" for dogs as well :)

Riots teeth are as white as can be right now :)

Yep, as everyone's said rawhide's are just trouble.

I've heard of dogs choking, and a similar raw hide treat that I gave Roxy got stuck in her throat, as Caren did, I had to reach in and pull it out.. After a lot of chewing they get really slimey and slippery.. Yick.

Summer mentioned real raw bones. My guys love them, and it's great for their teeth!

lol they are bones you can get straight from the butcher with some meat still on them.

Dogs go crazy for them. Make sure its supervised chewing though!

I have to say... when Buddy was smaller he got rawhides and I would take them away when they got too small (as anyone should do with any chew) and now he gets compressed rawhide. He loves them! I have more fear of Bullysticks than that of compressed rawhide. Buddy no longer gets normal rawhide as he is too big, but he gets other chews (we also stay away from Greenies, those things are horrible!).

Some dogs are okay with them and some don't do well at all ;) Frankly, I would stay away from anything not made in the USA because alot of the other countries use chemicals and phylmaldahide (< not spelled right) in the rawhide process. My 1 year old ACD got Gastritis from eating rawhide but my 11 year old GSD that lives upstairs with my parents has been eating rawhide since he was a pup with no issues :) . If you have an aggressive chewer than I would stay away from it.

well i will be a dissenter (wow, funny that!).

in addition to raw bones, bully sticks, moo tubes and all natural pig ears, my dog does get all natural compressed rawhides - he loves to gnaw on them and they take longer to eat than anything else (this dog can finish off a RMB or recreational bone in about 20 minutes!), so he has them when supervised, and i take them away once they get below 4-5 inches. they are the only thing he CANNOT break big pieces off of.

i don't give pressed rawhides because luce peels them and that makes me nervous. regular rawhides they do fine with.

it all depends on your dog and your dog's chewing style.

Bodhi does get rawhide..

I am yet to find something that lasts as long as her rawhide does. Everything else is gone in a few seconds.

Meaty bones are no good for indoor chewing as they are too messy and bloody.
