I need some suggestions on some high calorie, high nutrition food for my dog, due to an injury he had to have an FHO on Thursday and I need some ideas on food for him. HE is hard to keep weight on already and he weighs in at 90 pounds although since the sx he has lost weight already. He is very picky and so far won't drink water unless I have been mixing some yogurt in it ( I thought this would help his belly with all the meds etc..)
Its hard for him to get around and he has bed rest for 2 weeks, he had a BM today after 3 days but it was quite painful for him as he can't squat with the leg,
What are some food that are high in calories and nutrition that I can try, I am willing to cook for him as up until the sx we didn't do allopathic medicine. Since the sx he is on narcotic injections every 8-12 hours for the first 3-4 days and on Metacam to take out swelling ( his good leg was really swelling) the incsision looks good and he had 2 doses of Cefalozin IV the the first 2 days.
So far he has eaten 1 can of A/d at the vets the day after
and here at home 2 chicken breasts ( not all at one time) and 1 cup of EVo but he didn't want the EVO today, I am out to get him some more canned food to try, but I thought there were some recipes for sick dogs.
Thanks
Claudette

a good method for getting weight on is to use fatty meats for preparing food, such as 70% lean ground beef for example. most dogs also really love green tripe, if you can't get it fresh, tripett is a good canned brand.

i wouldn't expect him to eat all that much while he is still being sedated. all the meds might just make him feel sick to the stomach. you can try some oatmeal with some eggs and a little bit of honey stirred in, or maybe some baby food (without onion or onion powder) will work.

i hope he will have a quick recovery!
