Hi guys,
I know I have not been on in a long time.
So here is a little update, our old Doxie past away at the beginning of dec, long story and I don't feel like getting into it. Well we decided to get a new one at the end of Jan. Yesterday he turn 3 months old, and a little monster like most puppies, but he is coming along quite well. He is also eatting Canidae all stages.

So I don't know if I am being over protective or what. So yesterday morning when we got up Thumpers back leg popped. It has been doing it enough today for me to notice. It is not hurting him or causing any problems. He has been running around like a fool dog like he does everyday. I have been making sure not to let him jump off of stuff, I carry him on stairs, ect. I looked at the leg a few times today and it feels fine and I moved it and it popped once and he didn't react at all.

He has a vet appt on friday for his shots and I am going to have the vet look at it. Could this be just from him growing or something more serious? Anyone have any ideas that I could ask my vet about?

here is a picture of him!

Probably the knee popping in and out of the groove. This will often happen in small breeds when they are growing.

I was kinda thinking that but I was not sure considering I still am kinda new with little dogs, I have always had big dogs. I let you know the outcome... I am debating on weather or not to call the breeder and let her know or just wait till after the vet appt.

luxating patella - trick knee?

Your little one may have a luxating patella or trick knee.

The Hot Dog Breed is number 20 on the list of 50 breeds that tend to get this. Many dogs live for years with a knee that pops in and out of place on its own. No pain is associated with levels one or two of this luxating problem. It is many times genetic and will show up by 4 months of age.

If it doesn't go back into place on it own you can help it along with a little manual help ... Not much of a problem at all. ( again, no pain)

If the knee stays in the abducted or adducted rotation for too long it can cause arthritis in later years.

50% of the time surgery will be needed for levels three and four.

Sounds like your little one is doing well and may be able to work itself out.

I am sure your VET will be able to feel the pop.

Don't rush into any surgery and get a 2nd opinion if you every consider any surgery. This is a VERY common problem with little dogs.

I run the Doggie Chalet Hotel in Alaska - We see this alot and most do not need an operation at all.

Let us know how it works out for you.
