I just bought a puppy last week and he is 9 weeks old. I got a crate for him so that I could crate train him, and I used the divider so that it was more his size. I make sure to take him out to use the bathroom right before bedtime. Then I put him in his crate. He starts screaming and crying really early in the morning because he has pooped in his crate and is all over his poop. I don't know what routine I should be doing so that this doesn't happen. If anyone has ANY advice or if anyone has experienced this before and figured out what to do please please let me know. Thanks:D

At that age, you should be taking him out 3-4 hours after you go to bed as well. 9 weeks is just toooo young to be holding it all night. It's best to set an alarm clock in the middle of the night to take him out. I know it's going to be tiresome but is something we all have to go through.

It pays off in the long run :)

Echo, pup man. I just wanted to add that it won't last long. I don't know what breed your puppy is, but larger breeds can usually hold it through the night around 12-14 weeks. It will be over before you know it, and you'll be missing the times when he was just an itty bitty 'lil sweet slobbering ball of fluff and puppy breath. :)

ok.. so maybe I should set my alarm for 2am to take him out to go to the bathroom?? and then again at 6am? I hope that it works... also ... should I have his crate in my room or in the kitchen? If it is in the kitchen I can only hear him when if he is really whining loudly.... but I put him in there because it's not carpet and the tiles make it easy to clean up his messes. What do you all think?

BY the way... my puppy is a 9 week old soft coatled wheaten terrier. He will eventually become a medium sized dog between 40-45 lbs. But right now he is a little ball of fluff :)

Add how many months old your puppy is plus 1 to see how long your puppy should stay in his crate. So if your dog is about 2 months old he should stay in his crate for 3 hours at a time only.

I personally like having the crate next to me in my bedroom. I would place it on a stand so that I'am eye level with my pup and they can actually see you. If they start whinning a bit, you can easily just place your hand or fingers inside to sooth em'. I also like doing play time right before it's bed time... a tired pup is a good pup :)

I am going to try keeping the crate in my room and hopefully that will help. I am also going to set my alarm clock to wake up in the middle of the night... unless the puppy will wake me up if he has to go to the bathroom. Thanks for all your helps! :)

HI,
I also have a ten week old pup and we're pen training her at night...she had poop accidents only the first few days with us...I feed her three times a day, small amounts, then she takes a little nap, usually about 30 mins...as soon as she wakes up...I take her directly outside and let her do her business and reward her as soon as she poops..with "good dog" no treats...just a pat on the head...her last meal is usually around 9 pm, same ritual....nap, then poop outside...then I set the alarm and wake her around 2 am, and again at 6 ish for bathroom break outside.....so far this is working pretty good.....I did feed her later in the evening only once, and she pooped in the pen during the night..what a mess...so I went back to 9 pm and it seems to work good for her system.......good luck in your trials....

When I first got my puppy, she was a about 8 weeks old, and was neglected by previous owners( in my opinion). However, she has never pooped in the house. She has pee pee accidents, but not poopies. I lucked out there not having to train her to go # 2 outside, she just did. Maybe the last owners did teach her that, but they still treated her horribly.
