Hi guys,
I wonder if any of you can give me some advice or personal experiences.
I live in Suriname South America, a country with a very high crime rate that is getting worse daily. Because of this I own 2 Fila's to protect my family as I often work at night and am considered something of a target to the criminal element. The problem being faced now by dog owners is that the criminals are regularly poisoning dogs in order to rob the properties. The poisons used are very quick and make the likes of paraquat look like childs play.

Both of my animals are fed in an enclosed area by either my wife my daughter, me or,on occasion to facilitate vacations, my sister in law, they are made to sit when I place the food down and wait while I clean and refresh the water bowls etc and after 2-5 minutes they are told to "eat". They are not fed anything in any different way. No tit bits and any treats are fed from the bowl. Leica my eldest fila at 14 months had also been trained by me (a complete novice / amateur in bait training) not to take any food from the yard or from anyone else. This was initially reasonably successful with me on one occasion coming hom to find a present of part of a roast chicken deposited at the back door untouched. A present that I would have preferred to be left where found but some success nonetheless. Similarly she refused food from our maid and gardner. Recently though we had a failure with her accepting food from a fairly regular visitor to the house. I intend to start a similar training with our younger puppy but hope to be more successful.
Has anyone successfully poison proofed / bait trained their animals and if so what tips or advice can you give. I have read the article posted by Fila slave which was interesting and was very similar to the system I used for my Leica but would be fascinated with any opinions experiences some of you may have.
A bit long, sorry about that.
Many thanks
Gordon

I know this is part of French Ring training, but I don't know how it is done.

Here's some links that i'm familiar with. There can be some negative drawbacks to doing this, and if you don't have the right dog to do it with, you're probably better off keeping your dog safe from this exposure than relying on him to avoid food not given by you.

Here's a thread from another board that go into detail about this training. Its not for everyone or every dog.

To tell you the truth, with my Filas, I have much greater success explaining things to them than I do with repetitive training. It wouldn't hurt to back up your training with some nose to snout chats explaining things.

Yes, I know it sounds nuts . . . but it works. Just ask the Filarotten and Buckshot ;) And some of the German Shepherd owners have found it works as well.

I have to agree with Renee...these monsters really do well, with one on one conversation.

Brutus and Roxie have always refused food from anyone but us. I never really taught either of them... they just won't eat it.

Oh my. I would LOVE to see that...I think that is just wonderful, seriously.

If I tried to ever `explain' anything to Ruby or Chester they would sit there happily drinking in every word I said, swipe me up the face with a slobbery tongue when I'd finished, and go back to doing whatever it was they were doing!!

But I have to say, when I had Shepherds, it was uncanny and very creepy how much they would understand of what we said.
